What (if anything) can justify the use of fur?

Abstract

Si aceptamos que los animales no humanos son seres dotados con una individualidad, que tienen una cierta agencia e intereses, que poseen sentimientos y capacidad de sufrir, la consecuencia más directa de esto es considerarlos como miembros de la comunidad moral y, por tanto, como tales miembros asumir que no pueden ser tratados como simples medios o recursos. Muchos autores que defienden los derechos de los animales han argumentado que estos no pueden ser utilizados como medios para los fines humanos desde un punto de vista ético (Regan, Francione, Donaldson y Kymlick, Nussbaum y muchos otros). Si esto es así, por ejemplo, en lo que concierne a la alimentación, lo sería mucho más en lo que se refiere a la ropa que usamos los humanos. No estaría justificado utilizar a los animales como medios para producir ropas o cazar animales salvajes con la única finalidad de la moda o de aumentar el beneficio de la industria textil. Matar a un animal para usar su piel no estaría justificado por diversas razones: primero, porque supone privarles del derecho a la vida, sin el cual el resto de derechos carecen de sentido; segundo, porque supondría no tenerlos en consideración como sujetos de la comunidad moral, sino simplemente como objetos; tercero, porque este uso se hace con un fin frívolo y completamente innecesario. El uso de los animales como partes de la industria y mercado de las pieles no puede justificarse. No obstante, ¿habría algún uso que podría estar justificado? ¿Podríamos usar la piel de los animales que, por ejemplo, han muerto por causas naturales después de disfrutar una vida con dignidad? ¿Eso respetaría su estatus moral? ¿Haríamos lo mismo con la piel humana? En este paper, desde un punto de vista moral, se analizará si existe algún uso de la piel que pueda justificarse y si aunque el animal hubiera vivido una vida satisfactoria y hubiera tenido una muerte natural, el uso de su piel no implica profundizar y ahondar en su consideración como objetos más que como sujetos.

If we accept that non-human animals are beings who are individuals, who have agency and interests, who have feelings and suffer, the most direct consequence is considering them as members of the moral community and, consequently, they must always be treated as ends and not as means or resources. In this sense, many authors who support animal rights have argued that the use of animals as means for human s ends cannot be justified from an ethical point of view (Regan, Francione, Donaldson and Kymlicka, Nussbaum and many others). If this is so, for example, as far as food is concerned, it seems that there are more reasons for clothes. It would not be justified using animals as means of producing fur clothes or hunting wild animals for the sole purpose of fashion or to increase the wealth of fashion companies. Killing an animal to use her fur would not be justified for various reasons: firstly, because it would deprive them of the right to life, without which the rest of rights are meaningless; secondly, because it would mean not considering them subjects of the moral community, but mere objects; thirdly, because this would be done for a frivolous and absolutely unnecessary end. The use of animals as parts of the fur production process cannot be justified. Would there be any use that would admit justification? Could we use the fur of an animal that, for example, would have died from natural causes after developing a life with dignity? Would that respect her moral status? Would we do the same with human skin? In this paper, from an ethical point of view, it will be analyzed if there is some use of fur than can be justified and if, although the animal would have a life with dignity and a natural death, the use of her fur is merely another form of their consideration as objects rather than subjects.
