Síndromes geriátricos

Abstract

A menudo se confunden vejez y enfermedad, pero son dos términos completamente distintos. Los individuos envejecemos de forma muy variable y desigual, por lo que es importante hacer una valoración integral e individualizada con el fin de aplicar los cuidados de forma eficaz. La edad no es el único determinante para definir el concepto de paciente geriátrico, se tienen en cuenta otros aspectos como la pluripatología, la presencia de incapacidades físicas y/o psíquicas. No obstante, cuanto mayor sea la edad de un individuo más posibilidades tendrá de cumplir los criterios de paciente geriátrico. El anciano es un gran consumidor de recursos sanitarios, por lo que cada vez se necesitan más profesionales con formación de este ámbito. Es primordial conocer los diferentes síndromes geriátricos, sus causas, consecuencias y la forma de prevenirlos; identificar los pacientes con riesgo de padecer alguno de ellos e intervenir a tiempo para mantener su autonomía e independencia.

Old age and illness are often confused. However, they are two completely different terms. Individuals age in a variable and unevenly way, so it is important to make a full and personalized evaluation in order to implement effective care. Age is not the sole determinant to define the concept of geriatric patient. We need to take into account other aspects such as multi pathology, the presence of physical and / or mental disabilities, etc. However, the higher age of the individual, the more likely to meet the criteria of geriatric patient. The elderly are big consumers of health care resources, increasing the need of training more professionals in this area. It is essential to know the various geriatric signs, its causes, consequences and how to prevent them; identifying patients prone to any of those risks and intervene in an early stage to maintain their autonomy and independence.
