El papel del arte en la construcción de la identidad cultural de Nigeria : un estudio sincrónico del papel del arte y los artistas en las décadas sucesivas a la independencia (1960-80)

Abstract

Ante la falta de estudios culturales en español sobre el África subsahariana en general y el arte nigeriano en concreto, el presente trabajo de fin de grado pretende estudiar el papel del arte y los artistas en la construcción de la identidad cultural de Nigeria durante las décadas que sucedieron a la independencia del país, entre 1960 y 1980. Con este propósito, se prestará especial atención a la Síntesis Natural, un movimiento artístico que se definió por su compromiso social con la construcción de la nueva Nigeria. Se abordará la cuestión desde el enfoque constructivista de la identidad cultural de Stuart Hall, valorando, además, otras teorías relevantes como el pensamiento poscolonial y el orientalismo.

Given the lack of cultural studies in the Spanish language concerned with Subsaharan Africa in general and Nigerian art in particular, the present investigation seeks to study the role of art and artists in the construction of Nigerian cultural identity in the decades that followed the country’s independence, from 1960 to 1980. For this purpose, the study’s focus will be Natural Synthesis, an artistic movement defined by its social compromise towards the construction of the new Nigerian state. The issue will be analysed through Stuart Hall’s constructivist concept of cultural identity, while also taking into account other relevant theories such as post-colonialism and orientalism.
