La Contrarrevolución en el mundo árabe : el caso de Bahréin

Abstract

En este trabajo se realiza una aproximación histórico-política a los levantamientos en Bahréin del año 2011. Se han analizado los intereses confluyentes de distintos actores involucrados, centrándonos especialmente en los de Arabia Saudita y Estados Unidos respecto de Bahréin y entre ellos, y viendo cómo todo ello ha afectado al resultado de las revueltas en el Estado insular. En primer lugar, hemos hecho un estudio sobre la historia a medio-corto plazo de Bahréin, a fin de comprender las causas profundas del descontento entre la población y cómo estos problemas han ido evolucionando hasta llegar al estallido de la revolución de 2011. Después, se estudia el desarrollo de la misma y la posterior represión del gobierno y del Consejo de Cooperación del Golfo a lo largo de ese mismo año, profundizando en los intereses de este último para mantener el estatus quo. Por último, hemos analizado la situación en la que se encontraba Estados Unidos, que mantiene importantes intereses estratégicos y defensivos en la región, y su muy criticada reacción (o, más bien, falta de ella) a los sucesos que estaban teniendo lugar, a fin de dilucidar si pudo haber frenado los abusos a los derechos humanos cometidos en el marco de la Contrarrevolución.

In this paper, a historical-political approach to the Bahraini uprisings of 2011 is carried out. The confluent interests of the different actors involved have been analysed, focusing especially on those of Saudi Arabia and the United States with respect to Bahrain and among each other. In addition, it seeks to determine how all this has affected the result of the revolts in the insular State. First of all, we have made a study about Bahrain's short/medium-term history, in order to understand the root causes of the discontent among the population, and how these problems have evolved up to the outbreak of the 2011 revolution. It is also studied the development and the later repression of the government and of the Council of Cooperation of the Gulf throughout that same year, deepening in the interests of the last one to maintain the status quo in Bahrain. Finally, we have analysed the situation in which the United States was (as the country maintains important strategic and defensive interests in the region), and its much criticized reaction (or, rather, lack of it) to the events that were taking place, in order to determine if they could have stopped the human rights abuses committed in the framework of the Counterrevolution.
