Japan and the World Expositions as a tool for cultural diplomacy during the Meiji Period

Abstract

El objetivo de este trabajo es ofrecer un análisis comparativo de la imagen oficial que Japón presenta al mundo en las exposiciones universales desde que comienza a participar en ellas en l'Exposition Universelle de Paris celebrada en 1867. Para llevar a cabo este análisis, se realizará una revisión académica de publicaciones relacionadas con los conceptos "public diplomacy", "cultural diplomacy" y "soft power. Esta revisión bibliográfica clarificará los parámetros y rasgos a tener en consideración para llevar a cabo el análisis de la evolución de la imagen que Japón proyecta en el ámbito internacional.

The aim of this investigation is to offer a comparative analysis of the official image Japan presents at the World Expositions since the country started to participate in 1867 at l'Exposition Universelle de Paris. To conduct the analysis, a bibliographic review of the academic publications related to the concept "public diplomacy", “cultural diplomacy” and “soft-power” will be done. The bibliographic revision will clarify the parameters that need to be considered when conducting the analysis of the evolution of the image Japan projects at the international sphere.
