Los hermanos de niños con discapacidad intelectual : dificultades y fortalezas

Abstract

La discapacidad intelectual afecta a la persona que la padece y a su ambiente, incluyéndose en este el sistema fraterno. Existen pocas investigaciones con resultados muy dispares sobre la experiencia de tener un hermano con Síndrome de Down o Autismo. Objetivo: Estudiar si existen diferencias en el ajuste psicológico de los hermanos de niños con Síndrome de Down, Autismo y grupo control y analizar si variables como el nivel socioeconómico, sexo, grado de problemas de conducta del hermano con discapacidad, orden en la jerarquía fraterna y la percepción de la calidad de la relación entre hermanos influye en las fortalezas y dificultades de los hermanos sin discapacidad. Método: Este estudio constó de una muestra de 40 sujetos (10 hermanos de niños con Autismo,14 de niños con Síndrome de Down y 16 de grupo control) de10 a 20 años de la Comunidad de Madrid. Se emplearon dos instrumentos: Strengths and Difficulties Questionnaire (SDQ) para evaluar el ajuste psicológico de los hermanos y la escala de problemas de conducta del Inventario para la Planificación de Servicios y Programación individual (ICAP) para evaluar los problemas de conducta del niño con discapacidad. Resultados: Los hallazgos mostraron no existir diferencias significativas en el ajuste psicológico de los hermanos entre los distintos tipos grupos (Síndrome de Down, Autismo y neurotípicos). Conclusiones: Tener un hermano con Autismo o con Síndrome de Down no implica un peor ajuste psicológico del hermano sin discapacidad intelectual.

The intellectual disability affects the person who suffers it and its environment, including in this the fraternal system. There are few investigations with very different results about the experience of having a brother with Down Syndrome or Autism. Objective: To study if there are differences in the psychological adjustment of siblings of children with Down Syndrome, Autism and control group and analyze whether variables such as socioeconomic status, sex, degree of problem of behavior of the brother with disability, order in the fraternal hierarchy and the perception of the quality of the relationship between siblings influences the strengths and difficulties of siblings without disabilities. Method: This study involved a sample of 40 subjects (10 siblings of children with Autism, 14 of children with Down Syndrome and 16 of control group) from 10 to 20 years old in the Community of Madrid. Two instruments were used: Strengths and Difficulties Questionnaire (SDQ) to evaluate the psychological adjustment of the siblings and the scale of behavioral problems of the Inventory for the Planning of Services and Individual Programming (ICAP) to evaluate the behavior problems of the child with disability. Results: The findings showed no significant differences in the psychological adjustment of the siblings between the different types of groups (Down Syndrome, Autism and control group). Conclusions: Having a brother with Autism or Down Syndrome does not imply a worse psychological adjustment of the brother without intellectual disability
