Wildfires and socioeconomic variables in Galicia, Spain: Panel Data Analysis

Abstract

Analizamos la influencia de las variables asociadas a la vulnerabilidad socioeconómica sobre algunos factores relacionados con los incendios forestales. Empleamos datos de panel para observar la dinámica de los incendios forestales y la vulnerabilidad socioeconómica durante quince años (2001-2015) en los municipios de Galicia, que es la región más afectada históricamente por los incendios forestales en España. Utilizamos variables meteorológicas junto con variables socioeconómicas para mostrar la relación con los aspectos de vulnerabilidad. Los resultados muestran una relación existente entre estas variables y el número de incendios forestales, las hectáreas quemadas y la virulencia de los incendios forestales. Factores socioeconómicos, como la población envejecida y las explotaciones ganaderas o las hectáreas rústicas, vinculadas con la temperatura, la humedad y la velocidad del viento, afectan el número de ocurrencias de incendios forestales y sus capacidades destructivas. El estudio crea conciencia sobre todos los aspectos que causan este tipo de desastres para poder así reducir los riesgos.

We analyzed the influence of variables associated to socioeconomic vulnerability over some factors related to wildfires. We employed panel data techniques in or-der to capture the dynamic of wildfires and socioeconomic vulnerability over fif-teen years (2001-2015) in the municipalities of Galicia, which is the most histori-cally affected region by wildfires in Spain. We used meteorological variables together with socioeconomic variables in order to show the relation with vulnerability aspects. The results show an existing relationship between these variables and the number of wildfires, the burned hectares and the virulence of forest fires. Socioeconomic factors like aged population and livestock farms or rustic hectares, linked with temperature, humidity and wind velocity, affect the number of occurrences of wildfires and their destructive capacities. The study raises awareness about all those aspects that cause this kind of disasters in order to reduce risks.
