War in Yemen and Saudi-Iranian involvement

Abstract

La guerra en Yemen, que comenzó en marzo de 2015 y continúa aún hoy (5 de mayo de 2020), es una de las guerras civiles más devastadoras de este siglo, dejando a miles de yemeníes con necesidades urgentes de nutrición, medicinas y saneamiento. Numerosos académicos también se han referido a ella como una guerra indirecta entre los dos actores más relevantes y poderosos de la región: Irán y Arabia Saudita. La rivalidad entre estos dos países se ha hecho presente en este conflicto a través de las tensiones diplomáticas, las grandes inversiones realizadas por ambas partes e incluso por una serie de ataques aéreos. A lo largo de este documento se analizará el papel y el impacto de la interferencia de Irán y Arabia Saudita en la guerra, evaluando el alcance de sus implicaciones, intereses, ganancias y pérdidas. Además, se estudiará la situación en Yemen antes de la guerra, las principales causas originarias de este conflicto, así como el papel desempeñado en los últimos años por los principales grupos regionales involucrados en la guerra. Por último, se hará una comparación entre las ganancias y las pérdidas obtenidas por los dos antagonistas con mayor poder en la región, basándose no sólo en esta guerra sino también en conflictos y disputas pasadas.

The war in Yemen, starting in March 2015 and continuing still today (5th of May 2020), is one of the most devastating civil wars of this century, with thousands of Yemenis currently in urgent need of nutrition, medicines and sanitation. Numerous academics have also referred to it as a proxy war between the two most relevant and powerful actors in the region: Iran and Saudi Arabia. The rivalry between these two countries has been made present in this conflict through diplomatic tensions, large investments made by both parties and even by a series of airstrikes. The role and impact of Iran and Saudi Arabia’s interference in the war will be analyzed throughout this paper, evaluating the extent of their implications, interests, wins and losses. In addition, the situation in Yemen before the war, the main root causes of this conflict, as well as the role played in recent years by the main regional groups involved in the war will be studied. Finally, a comparison will be made between the wins and losses obtained by the two antagonists with the greatest power in the region, based not only on this conflict but also on past struggles and disputes.
