“Lecciones" de espiritualidad en los tratados sobre la oración y la tribulación (1557-1558) del P. Diego Laínez, S.J.

Abstract

Esta tesis tiene como objetivo ofrecer la transcripción, el estudio y el comentario de los tratados sobre la oración y sobre la tribulación del Padre jesuita Diego Laínez (1512-1565), Prepósito General de la Compañía de Jesús entre los años 1558 y 1565. Un aspecto imprescindible para el estudio de estos tratados es el acercamiento a la actividad de los primeros jesuitas como lectores de lecciones sacras. Éstas, según la “Fórmula del Instituto”, formaban parte del ministerio de la palabra de Dios propio de los jesuitas. Las lecciones sacras sobre la oración (1557-1558) y sobre la tribulación (1558) que el P. Laínez impartió en Roma en la iglesia de la Compañía de Jesús, Santa Maria della Strada, fueron copiadas y convertidas en tratados. Éstos se divulgaron por diferentes lugares y en esta tesis se ofrece el estudio de dos ejemplares del tratado de la tribulación y uno de la oración. La tesis está dividida en cinco grandes capítulos y un apéndice documental. El primero de los capítulos se dedica a una aproximación biográfica de Diego Laínez. El estudio de su vida facilita la comprensión de su faceta como lector y el tratamiento de los temas de Espiritualidad de los tratados. El segundo aborda el estudio de las lecciones sacras de los jesuitas en sus primeros años y más concretamente de las lecciones que impartió Diego Laínez. El tercer capítulo se dedica al estudio del Tratado de la oración, donde se pueden encontrar los aspectos formales del documento, el contexto histórico del mismo y los aspectos más relevantes sobre la oración que se tratan en el documento. El capítulo cuarto está dedicado al estudio del Tratado sobre la tribulación. Tras el tratamiento del documento propiamente dicho se analiza también el contexto histórico y los recursos que utiliza Laínez para instruir sobre el tema. A su vez se realiza un recorrido por el texto para extraer los aspectos más importantes sobre el concepto de tribulación y sobre los remedios que ofrece Laínez para afrontarla. El último capítulo está concebido a modo de conclusión que nos permita contemplar los rasgos de la Espiritualidad que ofrecen los tratados de Laínez. En el apéndice documental se ofrecen los textos de los dos tratados con una transcripción lo más literal posible. Los datos que hemos encontrado en las lecciones del P. Diego Laínez recogidos en estos tratados tenían muy en cuenta la vida y circunstancias de sus numerosos oyentes, tanto sacerdotes y religiosos, como laicos y se adaptaban muy bien a la realidad en que vivían (como sería propio de un autor humanista). Incluso en algunos casos son aplicables a realidades actuales.

This thesis aims to provide the transcription, study and commentary of treatises on prayer and tribulation of the Jesuit Father Diego Laínez (1512-1565), Superior General of the Society of Jesus between the years 1558 and 1565. An essential aspect of the study of these treatises is the approach to the activity of the first Jesuits as lecturers of sacred lectures. These, according to the "Formula of the Institute", were part of the ministry of the word of God, typical of the Jesuits. The sacred lectures on prayer (1557-1558) and on tribulation (1558) that Fr. Laínez gave in Rome in the Church of the Society of Jesus, Santa Maria della Strada, were copied and converted into treatises. These were disseminated in different places and in this thesis the study of two copies of the treatise on tribulation and one of the prayer are offered. The thesis is divided into five major chapters and a documentary appendix. The first chapter is devoted to a biographical approach of Diego Laínez. The study of his life facilitates the understanding of his facet as a reader and the treatment of the Spirituality topics of the treatises. The second chapter deals with the study of the sacred lectures of the Jesuits in their early years and more specifically of the lectures taught by Diego Laínez. The third chapter mainly deals with the study of the Treatise on prayer, where you can find the formal aspects of the document, the historical context and the most relevant aspects of prayer of the document. The fourth chapter is dedicated to the study of the Treatise on tribulation. After dealing with the document itself, the historical context and the resources used by Laínez to instruct on the subject are also analyzed. At the same time, an analysis of the text is carried out to extract the most key aspects about the concept of tribulation and about the remedies offered by Laínez to face it. The last chapter is conceived as a conclusion that allows us to contemplate the features of Spirituality offered by the treatises of Laínez. In the documentary appendix the texts of the two treatises are offered with a transcription as literal as possible. The data that we have found in the lectures of Fr. Diego Laínez collected in these treatises took into account the life and the circumstances of his numerous listeners, both priests as well as religious, including lay people and were adapted very well to the reality in which they lived (as would be typical of a humanist author). Even in some cases they are still applicable to the current realities.
