Interreligious Creativity in the Quest for Sustainability: Bridging the Gap between the Strong and the Weak, the Deep and the Shallow

Abstract

Existe un renovado interés en el papel que las religiones en general, y las teologías en particular, pueden desempeñar en la búsqueda global de la sostenibilidad, así como en las posibilidades y límites del diálogo interreligioso relacionado con uno de los principales desafíos de nuestro tiempo: el logro de los Objetivos de Desarrollo Sostenible (ODS) definidos en la Agenda 2030 de la ONU. La creciente convergencia discursiva interreligiosa sobre la ecología tiene sus raíces en el reconocimiento de un conjunto de meta-problemas ecológicos, más que en una meta-narrativa común y única (Tatay y Devitt 2017). Sin embargo, las metáforas, modelos e imágenes utilizadas en los discursos religiosos y científicos sobre la sostenibilidad apuntan a un diálogo potencialmente fructífero y a una emergente narrativa compartida. Además, las disciplinas académicas de los estudios interreligiosos y de la sostenibilidad ambiental comparten un sustancial terreno común: los académicos de ambos campos afirman que la interdisciplinariedad, las tendencias activistas y la relacionalidad son características clave de sus respectivas disciplinas (Di Vecchio 2018). También hay varias razones prácticas por las que estos dos actores sociales relevantes deberían pensar y actuar juntos para salvar la brecha académica entre las visiones de la sostenibilidad de lo superficial y lo profundo (Naess 1972), de lo fuerte y lo débil (Neumayer 1999). Una "convergencia pragmática" entre la ciencia y la religión podría ayudar a tender un puente, unir, vincular, sostener, fortalecer y profundizar la búsqueda global de la sostenibilidad.

There is a renewed interest in the role religions in general, and theologies in particular, can play in the global quest for sustainability, as well as in the possibilities and limits of interreligious dialogue related to one of the main challenges of our time: the achievement of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) defined in the UN Agenda 2030. The growing interreligious discursive convergence on ecology has its roots in the acknowledgment of a set of ecological meta-problems, rather than in a common, single meta-narrative (Tatay and Devitt 2017). However, the similar metaphors, models and images used in both religious and scientific discourses on sustainability points towards a potentially fruitful dialogue and an emerging shared narrative. Furthermore, the academic disciplines of interreligious studies and environmental sustainability share substantial common ground: scholars in both fields claim interdisciplinarity, activist tendencies, and relationality to be key characteristics of their respective disciplines (Di Vecchio 2018). There are also several practical reasons why these two relevant societal actors should think and act together in order to bridge the academic gap between the shallow and the deep (Naess 1972), the strong and weak (Neumayer 1999) views on sustainability. A pragmatic convergence between science and religion could help bridge, bind, bond, sustain, strengthen and deepen the global quest for sustainability.
