Estrategia para disminuir la severidad de la mucositis oral: cuidado bucal

Abstract

Introducción: La Mucositis, en general, es un proceso inflamatorio de los tejidos del tracto gastrointestinal desde la boca hasta el ano. Cuando se manifiesta principalmente en la cavidad oral, orofaringe e hipofaringe, se denomina Mucositis Oral. Es un efecto adverso frecuente en pacientes con tratamiento sometidos a quimioterapia y/o radioterapia aplicada en pacientes con cáncer de cabeza y cuello. En sus fases más agudas, puede llegar a tener graves consecuencias en la calidad de vida del paciente, afectando a la ingesta alimentaria y estado emocional, y llegando incluso a repercutir en la necesidad de disminuir o suspender el tratamiento contra el cáncer. Objetivo: sensibilizar a los pacientes que inicien un tratamiento oncológico sobre la necesidad de prevenir la mucositis oral. Metodología: desarrollo de un proyecto educativo dirigido a pacientes que inician un tratamiento oncológico basado en quimioterapia y/o radioterapia de cabeza y cuello. Implicaciones para la práctica de la enfermería: la enfermera debe tener mayores conocimientos y habilidades sobre el cuidado oral para atender a los pacientes que presentan riesgo de padecer Mucositis Oral. Además, debe ser capaz de educar a los pacientes que acuden a consulta para que realicen una higiene oral correcta en su vida diaria y prevenir así las complicaciones derivadas de la mucositis oral.

Introduction: mucositis, in general, is an inflammatory process of the tissues of the gastrointestinal tract from the mouth to the anus. When it manifests mainly in the oral cavity, oropharynx and hypopharynx, it is called oral mucositis. It is a frequent adverse effect in patients with chemotherapy and/or radiation therapy applied in patients with head and neck cancer. In its most acute phases, it can have serious consequences on the quality of life of the patients, affecting their diet and emotional state to the point of needing to reduce or suspend cancer treatment. Objective: to sensitize patients that initiate an oncological treatment on the need to prevent oral mucositis. Methodology: development of an educational project aimed at patients who initiate an oncological treatment based on chemotherapy and/or head and neck radiotherapy. Implications for the practice of nursing: the nurse must have greater knowledge and skills about oral care to attend to patients who are at risk of suffering from oral mucositis. In addition, the nurse must be able to educate patients who come to a consultation to perform oral hygiene.
