Enfermedades contagiosas y crecimiento económico : la malaria

Abstract

En este trabajo se pretende analizar la relación entre enfermedades contagiosas y crecimiento económico. Para ello se estudia a nivel teórico la influencia de la enfermedad en la economía y la influencia de la economía en la enfermedad, desagregando y clasificando los efectos que se derivan. Todo ello se apoya sobre una profunda revisión bibliográfica que permite comprender la heterogeneidad de estudios y resultados obtenidos sobre un tema tan extenso. Por este motivo, se elige como objeto de estudio la enfermedad de la malaria, enfermedad muy documentada, estudiando su situación actual y la situación económica de la región más afectada por la misma, África subsahariana. Por último, se realiza un análisis empírico sobre la incidencia de la malaria en el crecimiento económico. Este análisis empírico se basa en el contraste de un modelo econométrico que trata de probar que la malaria actúa como freno para el crecimiento económico. Finalmente, se presentan las conclusiones que apoyan la hipótesis de que la presencia de malaria en un país afecta negativamente a su desarrollo económico en los años siguientes.

The aim of this paper is to analyse the relationship between contagious diseases and economic growth. For this purpose, the influence of the disease on the economy and the influence of the economy on the disease are studied on a theoretical level, breaking down and classifying the different effects that are derived from such influence. This study is supported by a thorough revision of bibliography on the topic, which enables the understanding of the heterogeneity of studies and results obtained on such a vast topic. This is the reason why the chosen object of study is malaria, a disease on which there is a large amount of documentation, thus studying its current situation and the economic circumstances of the region that is most affected by malaria, sub-Saharan Africa. Lastly, an empirical study on the impact of malaria on economic growth is conducted. This empirical analysis is based on the contrast of an econometric model which attempts to prove that malaria acts as a brake on economic growth. Finally, the findings of the study, which support the hypothesis that the presence of malaria in a country affects its economic development in the following years in a negative way, are presented.
