The aim of this project is to improve the heating installation of a single-family home, optimizing the operation of the circulation pump and its interaction with the thermostat. This way, it is intended to reduce energy consumption while improving the operation of the system and the comfort of the inhabitants of the house. All of this will be done without resorting to drastic changes to the installation, such as completely changing the heating system, the plumbing, etc. To achieve this, it is important to make a detailed study of the existing heating installation. In the first part of this project, the different elements that make up the system (boiler, pumps, thermostat, radiators, etc.) are studied in detail, and models that will allow working with them, running simulations and testing different settings, are created. The first of these models emulates the hydraulic behavior of the installation, recreating the behavior of pipes and radiators. It allows the calculation of characteristics such as losses at different points in the system or in total, the pump flow rate, and the flow rates circulating through each element of the installation, among others. To create it, the different elements of the installation will be studied from a fluid-mechanics perspective, and the model will be created in the specialized software Epanet. The equilibrium of the system will also be calculated analytically, so that the same flow reaches all the radiators. In addition to modeling the hydraulic behavior, the same will also be done with the thermal behavior. For this, the theory of heat transmission will be used, and with it, it will be determined the heat flow from the radiator to the interior of the housing and from the interior of the housing to the exterior. A model based on this behavior will be created, and it will determine the relationship between the action of the thermostat on the circulation pump and the room temperature inside the house. For this, Matlab and Simulink softwares will be used. Once the models are created, several simulations will be carried out. First, the behavior of the current thermostat-pump system will be simulated, identifying the problems it may have. Then, with the results obtained, the annual energy consumption of the bomb will be calculated. After working with the existing installation, modifications to improve performance will be looked for and performed. These will consist of changing the thermostat and pump, such that an improved automatic regulator can be implemented. After deciding what the new elements will be, and designing a new control algorithm, we will proceed to simulate its behavior in the same way as was done with the current system, as well as calculating a new annual consumption forecast. Finally, the performances of both systems, as well as their energy consumptions, will be compared, to see what improvements have been obtained.
