La institucionalización de los validos durante la época de los Austrias

Abstract

A lo largo del siglo XVII tienen lugar en España los reinados de Felipe III, Felipe IV y Carlos II, los últimos monarcas de la Casa de Austria cuyo periodo en el trono estuvo marcado por la decadencia política, el auge cultural y la delegación del gobierno en los validos. El advenimiento de esta serie de personajes fue el fruto de muchos siglos de convergencia de la nobleza en torno a la figura del rey, algo que acabaría configurando la corte y una dinámica de relaciones e interdependencia entre la aristocracia y el monarca que terminarían por favorecer el ascenso de los validos. El origen, pues, de esta figura, así como sus distintas funciones y poderes, conforman el objeto de estudio de este ensayo que, también, busca trazar un marco común al rol de todos los personajes que podrían ser considerados como validos.

Throughout the 17th century the reigns of Philip III, Philip IV and Charles II, the last monarchs of the Spanish branch of the House of Habsburg, took place in Spain. Their time on the throne was marked by the political decline, a cultural surge and the delegation of the government on the favourites. The arrival of these figures was the product of many centuries of the nobility coming around the king, something that would end up shaping the Royal Court and a dynamic of relations and interdependence between the aristocracy and the monarch which, in the end, would advance the rise of the favourites. The origin, therefore, of this figure, as well as its various functions and powers, form the subject of study of this essay which also seeks to draw a common framework to the role of all the characters that could be considered a favourite.
