El TDAH en adultos: sintomatología, evaluación y tratamientos

Abstract

El trastorno por déficit de atención/hiperactividad es una patología neuropsiquiátrica caracterizada por altos niveles de inatención e hiperactividad o impulsividad. Se trata del trastorno con mayor prevalencia en la infancia y adolescencia y, desde sus inicios, los estudios del trastorno se han centrado exclusivamente en estas etapas. Teniendo en cuenta que en más de la mitad de los casos persisten los síntomas tras la adolescencia, y el impacto que tiene este en la vida diaria de las personas que lo padecen, se hace necesaria la expansión de su reconocimiento y el desarrollo de nuevas investigaciones. En el presente estudio se ha llevado a cabo una revisión bibliográfica de la investigación realizada hasta la actualidad sobre este trastorno en la edad adulta, atendiendo a las características principales de la sintomatología, comorbilidades, evaluación y tratamiento. Las conclusiones a las que se han llegado tras la revisión es la necesidad de formar a los profesionales en esta materia y de elaborar nuevas herramientas diagnósticas o actualizar las existentes con los criterios diagnósticos vigentes, así como el aumento del número de investigaciones que tienen como objeto el estudio de este trastorno en la edad adulta, con el fin de realizar diagnósticos más precisos y contar con evidencias sobre los métodos de tratamiento más eficaces.

Attention deficit / hyperactivity disorder is a neuropsychiatric condition characterized by high levels of inattention and hyperactivity or impulsivity. It is the disorder with the highest prevalence in childhood and adolescence and, since its inception, studies of the disorder have focused exclusively on these stages. Taking into account that in more than half of the cases the symptoms persist after adolescence, and the impact that this has on the daily life of the people who suffer from it, it is necessary to expand its recognition and the development of new research. In the present study, a bibliographic review of the research accomplished to date on this disorder in adulthood has been carried out, taking into account the main characteristics of the symptoms, comorbidities, evaluation and treatment. The conclusions that have been reached after the review is the need to instruct professionals in this area and to develop new diagnostic tools or update existing ones with the current diagnostic criteria, as well as the increase in the number of investigations aimed at the study of this disorder in adulthood in order to make more precise diagnoses and have evidence on the most effective treatment methods.
