A Matter of Size: Comparing IV and OLS estimates

Abstract

Las diferencias considerables entre las estimaciones de MCO y VI pueden interpretarse en la literatura como evidencia de que el instrumento no es válido. Sin embargo, esta comparación se lleva a cabo utilizando solo el coeficiente de MCO como referencia pero sin tener en cuenta ninguna medición estadística o información del Regresión OLS. Este artículo establece un marco donde la metodología de Oster (2017) podría utilizarse para comparar objetivamente estimaciones de MCO y VI.

Sizeable differences between OLS and IV estimates might be interpreted in the literature as evidence that the instrument is not valid. Yet, to the best of my knowledge, this comparison is carried out using only the OLS coefficient as a benchmark but without taking into account any statistical measurement or information from the OLS regression. This paper establishes a framework where Oster (2017)’s methodology might be used to compare objectively OLS and IV estimates.
