The main objective of this study is to analyze how has the introduction of the new bitcoin futures ETF (Exchange-traded fund) affected price volatility and volume of transactions in the main cryptocurrency, as well as the spillover effect among other crypto assets. For this purpose, an analysis of the logarithmic returns of Bitcoin (BTC), Ethereum (ETH) and Ripple (XRP) prices has been executed. In this manner, the aim is to analyze the price of cryptocurrencies and their evolution over time, in addition to the trading volume throughout the different cycles followed by these assets. In order to proceed with the study, data on the prices of the different cryptocurrencies have been obtained from the Yahoo! Finance website. They have then been processed to calculate both the mean and standard deviation of the logarithmic returns. Thus, following Panayiotis Theodossiou (2015), the relationship between these two statistics is compared to determine what has been the change in volatility between the periods before and after the introduction of the Bitcoin Futures ETF on the underlying asset. However, there is also a growing interest in the financial literature in the relationship between trading volume and asset volatility. Therefore, both parameters will be analyzed together to determine whether or not the introduction of the new futures ETF improves the stability of the Bitcoin and other cryptocurrencies price. |
