El uso del deporte como herramienta política en los países árabes

Abstract

En los últimos años el deporte ha comenzado a jugar un papel muy notorio en la política de ciertos países árabes, en especial Qatar y Arabia Saudí, mediante la inversión y la organización de eventos gracias a su gran cantidad de recursos. Esta circunstancia ha suscitado polémicas en multitud de sectores que ven como dichos países utilizan el soft power que otorga del deporte para mejorar su imagen y favorecer sus pretensiones comerciales mientras que dentro de dichos países los Derechos Humanos se vulneran de manera flagrante día tras día. Países como los Estados Unidos de América o la Unión Europea, defensores de determinados valores que dichos estados árabes contravienen han puesto pocas o nulas reticencias a estos eventos e inversiones. El objetivo de este trabajo de intentar analizar esta política de diplomacia deportiva llevada a cabo por Qatar y Arabia Saudí, cuál es el objetivo de estos Estados y cuál es el impacto que dicha política puede suponer para su población en materia de aperturismo y avance en Derechos Humanos. Al mismo tiempo, desentrañar el por qué de la escasa resistencia por parte de las democracias occidentales, cuáles son sus intereses en la zona y cual es el impacto que puede suponer también para ellos, además del papel que van o deberían seguir.

In recent years, sport has begun to play a very prominent role in the politics of certain Arab countries, especially Qatar and Saudi Arabia, through investment and the organization of events thanks to its wealth of resources. This circumstance has given rise to controversy in many sectors who see how these countries are using the soft power that sport gives to improve their image and promote their commercial pretensions, while within these countries human rights are being flagrantly violated day after day. Countries such as the United States of America or the European Union, defenders of certain values that these Arab states contravene, have shown little or no reticence to these events and investments. The aim of this paper is to try to analyse this policy of sports diplomacy carried out by Qatar and Saudi Arabia, what is the objective of these states and what is the impact that this policy may have on their population in terms of openness and progress in human rights. At the same time, we need to unravel why the Western democracies have so little resistance, what their interests are in the area and what impact this may have on them as well, in addition to the role they will or should play.
