Smallholder farmers in danger: The support of social enterprise in terms of food securtiy

Abstract

Algunas empresas sociales están orientadas a apoyar a estos pequeños agricultores y a cubrir ciertos problemas (Brimah, Olanipekun & Lawal, 2015; Busch & Barkema, 2022). Sin embargo, no sabemos qué tipo de prácticas y de qué manera están contribuyendo a nivel de impacto a mejorar las condiciones de estos agricultores. En el sector de las empresas sociales, la medición del impacto social es fundamental para comprender el potencial de cambio social generado (White et al., 2022). Sin embargo, el tema de la medición del impacto es todavía muy reciente y no se conocen bien las metodologías más eficaces para una buena medición y gestión del impacto social. Nuestra pregunta de investigación parte de la necesidad de entender cómo las empresas sociales están generando un impacto social positivo en términos de seguridad y soberanía alimentaria, y qué tipo de prácticas están llevando a cabo (Johansen, 2014). Algunos autores afirman la importancia de ciertas prácticas empresariales para la resiliencia de los pequeños agricultores (Heckelman, 2019), o también la relevancia del contexto cultural, social y comunitario. Sin embargo, no están claros los modelos de empresa social con los que contribuyen a este problema. Además, otros autores afirman que las cuestiones relacionadas con el cambio climático están afectando gravemente a las condiciones de los pequeños agricultores, pero estos no tienen por sí mismos la capacidad de hacer frente a estos inconvenientes (Eakin & Wehbe, 2009), aumentando el riesgo y los costes de su producción y, por tanto, empeorando sus condiciones de vida y de su comunidad (Brenni, 2015). Para llevar a cabo esta investigación, primero realizaremos una amplia revisión bibliográfica para conocer en profundidad los conceptos de seguridad y soberanía alimentaria. A continuación, diseñaremos una metodología cualitativa, a través del método de entrevista en profundidad, dirigida a los pequeños agricultores que trabajan con o para las empresas sociales para entender cómo estas empresas sociales contribuyen a los procesos de cambio social en términos de seguridad y soberanía alimentaria. Por último, esperamos dos tipos de contribuciones, una teórica y otra práctica. Una contribución práctica para entender las mejores prácticas de las empresas sociales en contextos de desarrollo que mejoran los niveles de seguridad y soberanía alimentaria de los pequeños agricultores, y una contribución teórica a las teorías del emprendimiento social y el impacto social.

Some social enterprises are oriented to support these smallholder farmers and cover certain problems (Brimah, Olanipekun & Lawal, 2015; Busch & Barkema, 2022). However, we do not know what kind of practices and in what way they are contributing at the impact level to improve the conditions of these farmers. In the social enterprise sector, measuring social impact is critical, to understand the potential for social change generated (White et al., 2022). However, the issue of impact measurement is still very recent and the most effective methodologies for good social impact measurement and management are not well known. Our research question starts from the need to understand how social enterprises are generating positive social impact in terms of food security and food sovereignty, and what kind of practices they are carrying out (Johansen, 2014). Some authors affirm the importance of certain business practices for the resilience of smallholder farmers (Heckelman, 2019), or also the relevance of the cultural, social and community context. However, it is not clear the models of social enterprise through which they are contributing to this problem. In addition, other authors claim that climate change issues are severely affecting the conditions of smallholder farmers, but they do not have by themselves the capacity to cope with these drawbacks (Eakin & Wehbe, 2009), increasing the risk and costs of their production and, therefore, worsening their living conditions and their community (Brenni, 2015). To carry out this research, we will first conduct an extensive literature review to understand in depth the concepts of food security and food sovereignty. Then we will design a qualitative methodology, through the in-depth interview method, aimed at smallholder farmers working with or for social enterprises to understand how these social enterprises contribute to the processes of social change in terms of food security and food sovereignty. Finally, we expect two types of contributions, one theoretical and one practical. A practical contribution to understand the best practices of social enterprises in development contexts that improve the levels of food security and food sovereignty of smallholder farmers, and a theoretical contribution to the theories of social entrepreneurship and social impact.
