La economía circular en el negocio de la moda : el caso de la ropa de alquiler. Análisis de la rentabilidad de Rent the Runway

Abstract

Este trabajo busca, en primer lugar, analizar la moda rápida, típica de la economía lineal, al igual que su impacto en el planeta y, con ello, demostrar la necesidad de evolucionar hacia la moda lenta, propia de la economía circular. Para ello, se explicarán ambas modas y las dos economías que representan, y lograr así comprender mejor la situación actual del sector textil. Además, se expondrán los negocios que han ido surgiendo propios de la economía circular que buscan paliar los efectos de la moda rápida y la economía lineal y, por ende, disminuir el impacto medioambiental y la huella en el planeta. Dentro de estas actividades, el trabajo se centra en el alquiler de ropa por ser un modelo relativamente nuevo dentro de este sector que tiene mucho potencial, aunque también mucho trabajo por delante. Tras explicar las alternativas a los negocios de la economía lineal y la descripción a fondo del alquiler de ropa, se analizarán las cuentas de una empresa ejemplar dentro del sector del alquiler de ropa para evidenciar tanto su situación, que es reflejo de la situación de todas las empresas de este sector, como su futuro prometedor, y con ello se obtendrán las conclusiones de este trabajo.

This paper aims, first of all, to analyse fast fashion, typical of the linear economy, and its impact on the planet, thereby demonstrating the need to evolve towards slow fashion, typical of the circular economy. To do so, both fashions and the two economies they represent will be explained in order to gain a better understanding of the current situation of the textile sector. In addition, the possible businesses that have been emerging in the circular economy that seek to mitigate the bad effects of fast fashion and the linear economy, and thus reduce the environmental impact and the footprint on the planet, will be presented. Within these businesses, the paper focuses on clothing rental as a relatively new activity within this sector that has a lot of potential, but also a lot of work ahead of it. After explaining the alternatives to linear economy businesses and the in-depth description of clothing rental, the accounts of an exemplary company in the clothing rental sector will be analysed to highlight both its situation, which is a reflection of the situation of all companies in this sector, and its promising future, and this will lead to the final conclusions of this work.
