Crecimiento económico y democracia y su influencia en el desarrollo de los Estados

Abstract

La democracia, el crecimiento económico y el desarrollo son tres conceptos ampliamente usados en nuestras sociedades como consecuencia del debate político y económico. Las interrelaciones entre estos términos, así como su influencia mutua conforman ramas enteras del pensamiento que modulan la legislación y la política económica y social de los países. Huelga decir que la investigación científica ha centrado sus estudios en el crecimiento económico y el desarrollo. Sin embargo, la relación de estos con la democracia, así como la forma en la que se interrelacionan y afectan al bienestar social, es un campo reciente. El presente trabajo tiene como objetivo estudiar la relación que existe entre estos términos y, más concretamente, cuantificar dicha relación para hallar en qué medida el crecimiento y la democracia influyen sobre el desarrollo. De esta forma, se podrá concluir si las instituciones democráticas, y no sólo el crecimiento económico, son significativas para entender el desarrollo de un Estado.

Democracy, economic growth and development are three concepts widely used in our societies as a consequence of political and economic debate. The interrelationships among these terms, as well as their mutual influence, shape entire branches of thought that modulate the legislation and economic and social policies of countries. It goes without saying that scientific research has focused its studies on economic growth and development. However, the relationship between these and democracy, as well as the way in which they interrelate and affect social welfare, is a recent field. The aim of this paper is to study the relationship among these terms and, more specifically, to quantify this relationship in order to find the extent to which growth and democracy influence development. In this way, it will be possible to know whether democratic institutions, and not only economic growth, are significant for understanding the development of a country.
