Cinema as a Soft Power Tool in South Korea: Diplomacy Through the Cinematic Industry. Is Soft Power a Geopolitical Strategy? The case study of Parasite and Squid Game

Abstract

Este trabajo analizará la visión que ostenta Corea del Sur respecto del poder, al haberse producido un incremento en el uso del poder blando por parte del país a través, entre otros elementos, de la famosa ola coreana. Para ello, primero nos centraremos en explicar los diferentes tipos de poder, así como, el concepto de diplomacia pública, que cobra una gran importancia en este estudio. A continuación, analizaremos el tipo de acercamiento que ha realizado el país en comparación con Corea del Norte, para lo cual contextualizaremos la situación económica, política y social de Corea del Sur. Tras ello, nos centraremos en el objeto de estudio, la cultura cinematográfica del país. Explicaremos así, tanto la evolución de la misma, como las razones detrás de su creciente éxito, el cual empezó con los conocidos K-dramas, pero ha sido propulsado específicamente con los ejemplos recientes de Parásitos o El juego del calamar. En este sentido, analizaremos el papel que ha tenido el gobierno como precursor de esta estrategia de diplomacia cultural y si se trata o no de una estrategia geopolítica. Finalmente, analizaremos qué supone este fenómeno a nivel geopolítico tanto para Corea del Sur, como para el resto de los países que se relacionan con ella, ofreciendo respuesta a la pregunta de si el desarrollo más reciente de esta industria es parte de una estrategia geopolítica.

This paper will analyze South Korea's view of power, as the country has seen an increase in the use of soft power through, among other elements, the famous Korean wave. To this end, we will first focus on explaining the different types of power, as well as the concept of public diplomacy, which is of great importance in this study. Next, we will analyze the type of rapprochement that the country has made in comparison with North Korea, for which we will contextualize the economic, political and social situation of South Korea. After that, we will focus on the object of study, the country's film culture. We will explain both its evolution and the reasons behind its growing success, which began with the well-known K-dramas, but has been boosted by the recent examples of Parasite or Squid Game. In this sense, we will analyze the role that the government has played as a precursor of this cultural diplomacy strategy and whether it has been or not a geopolitical strategy. Finally, we will analyze what this phenomenon means at a geopolitical level for South Korea, as well as for the rest of the countries that are related to it, offering an answer to the question of whether the latest development of this industry is part of a geopolitical strategy.
