NEUTRALITY AS A STRATEGY ON THE INTERNATIONAL RELATIONS, RELATED TO EU´S POSITION ON THE US.VS. CHINA FIGHT FOR SUPREMACY

Abstract

Hoy en día, hay tensiones entre las 2 superpotencias: China y EE. UU. Este conflicto, debido a la globalización y la interdependencia, se refleja y tiene consecuencias en todo el mundo. Este estudio comenzará centrándose en cómo las políticas de la Unión Europea han gestionado este enfrentamiento hasta el día de hoy. Se busca determinar cuál de las siguientes posiciones posiciones ha tendido a adoptar: ser aliado de EE.UU., ser aliado de China o ser neutral a lo largo del conflicto. Tras esta cuestión, la neutralidad como estrategia diplomática será el foco de la investigación. Este trabajo intentará entonces establecer cuáles son las ventajas, desventajas y dificultades que un Estado podría enfrentar al optar por esta posición de “no alianza”. Incluso se cuestionará si es posible adoptar tal posición de forma exitorsa. Los descubrimientos anteriores se utilizarán para analizar los efectos que podría enfrentar la UE al adoptar la neutralidad en una hipotética guerra de Taiwán contra China. Por lo tanto, el objetivo de esta investigación sería generar suficientes datos para determinar qué estrategia sería la más conveniente, y, por ende, debiera la UE aplicar ante el conflicto entre EE. UU. y China a partir de ahora. Igualmente, el estudio también permitirá al lector establecer si la neutralidad es plausible a través del escenario internacional actual.

As for now, there are tensions amongst the 2 superpowers: China and the US. This conflict, due to globalization and interdependence, reflects and has consequences around the globe. This study will start by focusing on how the European Union policies have managed this confrontation till present day. Whether the EU has been more prompt to adopt one of the following positions: being US´s ally, being China´s ally or being neutral throughout the conflict. After this information is presented, neutrality as a diplomatic strategy will be the focus of the investigation. This paper will then try to establish what are the perks, drawbacks, and difficulties that a State could face when opting for this “no-alliance” position succesfully. Or even if it is possible to adopt such a position. Furthermore, the previous information will be used to analyze the effects the EU could face, by adopting such position through a hypothetical Taiwan vs. China war. Therefore, the goal of this research would be to come up with enough data to support which strategy would be the best for the EU to adopt on the US vs. China conflict from now on. One step further, the study will also allow the reader to establish whether neutrality is plausible through the actual international canvas.
