Impacto de la pandemia de Covid-19 en los cuidadores de personas mayores

Abstract

Introducción: La pandemia de COVID-19 ha tenido repercusiones a nivel mundial y en toda la población. Sin embargo, los sectores más afectados han sido las personas mayores. Las residencias de mayores tuvieron grandes dificultades. En este trabajo se explican las repercusiones en los cuidadores formales e informales de personas mayores durante el COVID-19. Metodología: Se ha realizado una revisión sistemática de la bibliografía existente sobre la temática. El proceso de revisión se ha llevado a cabo desde diciembre de 2022 al 20 de enero de 2023. Resultados: En esta situación los cuidadores formales e informales se vieron desbordados desarrollando sintomatología ansiosa, depresión o síndrome del cuidador quemado. Sin embargo, este periodo de tiempo ha supuesto una oportunidad de desarrollo, dando a conocer efectos positivos de la pandemia en las personas cuidadoras como la búsqueda de sentido, desarrollo de estrategias de afrontamiento adaptativas o relaciones intergeneracionales. Conclusión: El papel de los cuidadores de personas mayores durante la crisis del COVID-19 ha sido fundamental. Sin embargo, se necesitan más investigaciones para determinar aquellos aspectos positivos de la tarea de cuidar. Sería necesario, a su vez, una serie de reformas para ayudar a los cuidadores informales, reestructurando las residencias y capacitando a mayor número de cuidadores formales.

Introduction: The COVID-19 pandemic has had repercussions worldwide and throughout the population. However, the most affected sectors has been the elderly. Therefore, nursing homes had great difficulties. This paper explains the repercussions on formal and informal caregivers of older people during COVID-19 due to their great care role. Methodology: A systematic review of the existing bibliography on the subject has been carried out. The review process has been carried out from December 2022 to January 20, 2023. Results: In this situation, formal and informal caregivers found themselves overwhelmed, developing anxious symptoms, depression, or cared-for caregiver syndrome. However, this very difficult period has meant a development opportunity for some people, revealing positive effects of the pandemic on caregivers (informal and formal) such as the search for meaning, development of coping strategies or intergenerational relationships. Conclusion: The role of caregivers of the elderly during the COVID-19 crisis has been fundamental. However, more research is needed to determine those positive aspects of the task of caring. In turn, a series of reforms would be necessary to help informal caregivers, restructuring residences and training a greater number of formal caregivers.
