AVANCES DE LA NBA GRACIAS AL BIG DATA

Abstract

El mundo del deporte es una de las industrias que más dinero mueven en el mundo, y en concreto el baloncesto americano. Millones de niños sueñan con jugar en lo más alto, dan todo cada partido de high school para que haya algún ojeador que les ofrezca una beca para la universidad y que de ahí puedan dar el salto al mundo profesional. El presente trabajo quiere desengranar algunas láminas para entender el avance y adaptación del baloncesto al mundo del data analytics. Aquí se unen dos conceptos que parece a priori que no son nada compatibles, la pasión y destreza física y mental que conlleva el desempeño de un deporte a nivel profesional, con el mundo analítico y estadístico de los datos. Se presenta una tesitura del cambio de juego de aquello que motiva a casi todo un país, gracias al entendimiento y estudio de transformar una mecánica que llevaba años intacta. Como fin, pretendo mostrar la evolución de las últimas 20 temporadas en el mundo de la NBA, con sus datos y avances para presentar de alguna manera clara y visual el “por qué” y “cómo” se han ido cambiando matices del juego que parecían en un principio intocables. A través de las herramientas de PowerBi y Python se van a dar unas visualizaciones que apoyarán la lógica de este trabajo.

The world of sport is one of the industries that moves the most money in the world, and in particular American basketball. Millions of children dream of playing at the highest level, they give their all every high school game so that if there is a chance from a scout who offers them a scholarship to college, and from there they can make the leap to the professional sphere. This paper aims to unravel some of the issues in order to understand the progress and adaptation of basketball to the world of data analytics. Here two concepts are united that seem at first sight to be incompatible: the passion and physical and mental skill involved in playing a sport at a professional level, with the analytical and statistical world of data. A dilemma is presented about the change of a game that motivates almost an entire country, thanks to the understanding and study of transforming the mechanics that had been untouched for years. As an end, I intend to show the evolution of the last 20 seasons in the world of the NBA, with its data and advances to present in a clear and visual way the "why" and "how" they have been changing nuances of the game that seemed at first unbroken. Using the PowerBi and Python tools, visualisations will be provided to support the logic of this work.
