Naturaleza y dignidad del amor

Abstract

El amor, fenómeno siempre difícil de encuadrar, es el auténtico protagonista de la reflexión de muchos autores de la Edad Media. Además de ser el punto de partida para conocer sin error, constituye el único medio para relacionarse de forma auténtica y segura con los otros y con el Otro.

Para Guillermo, la vivencia del amor desborda los límites de la razón común, que por sí sola no logra acceder a los misterios que fundan, sostienen y explican la realidad. Por esto, la insuficiencia de los sentidos corporales reclama esos otros que son interiores y espirituales, a través de los cuales se puede alcanzar la sabiduría, realizar la justicia y contemplar la belleza de todo lo que existe. La lógica humana no es, pues, la autosuficiencia, que enclaustra en uno mismo, sino el don que procede de fuera y que, al acogerlo, permite participar de Dios, amor derramado por el Espíritu en los corazones de los hombres según el modelo del Hijo.

El amor tiene así una profunda densidad antropológica, pero también epistemológica e incluso ontológica. El sensus amoris de la tradición monástica se revela como la vía decisiva para adentrarse en la íntima verdad del hombre, de Dios y de las cosas. De esta tradición nutre Guillermo su pensamiento y lo eleva hasta las más altas cumbres de la filosofía medieval.

Love, a phenomenon that is always difficult to frame, is the true protagonist of the reflection of many authors of the Middle Ages. In addition to being the starting point for knowing without error, it is the only way to relate authentically and safely with others and with the Other.

For Guillermo, the experience of love goes beyond the limits of common reason, which by itself cannot access the mysteries that found, sustain and explain reality. For this reason, the insufficiency of the bodily senses calls for those others that are interior and spiritual, through which wisdom can be achieved, justice carried out and the beauty of all that exists contemplated. Human logic is not, then, self-sufficiency, which cloisters in oneself, but the gift that comes from outside and which, by accepting it, allows one to participate in God, love poured out by the Spirit in the hearts of men according to the model of the Son.

Love thus has a deep anthropological density, but also epistemological and even ontological. The sensus amoris of the monastic tradition reveals itself as the decisive way to enter the intimate truth of man, God and things. From this tradition Guillermo nurtures his thought and elevates it to the highest peaks of medieval philosophy.
