The Importance of the Initial Response to a Communication Crisis: A Comparative Analysis of the Prestige and the Repsol Crisis in Peru

A lo largo de los años, las crisis se han convertido en algo habitual para muchas organizaciones, lo que ha fomentado la necesidad de estrategias eficaces de gestión de crisis. Este campo ha evolucionado rápidamente, tratando de orientar a los gestores de crisis para minimizar el daño infligido a la organización. Como dijo John F. Kennedy en los discursos de su campaña presidencial de 1959 y 1960, "la palabra china para "crisis" se compone de dos caracteres: uno representa el peligro y el otro la oportunidad". Esta afirmación subraya la naturaleza dual de una crisis, destacando tanto la amenaza que suponen como las oportunidades potenciales de crecimiento que pueden presentar si se gestionan adecuadamente. Además de la naturaleza evolutiva de las crisis, catástrofes medioambientales como los vertidos de petróleo han puesto de relieve la importancia de la respuesta inicial en la gestión de crisis. Mediante un análisis comparativo de dos importantes vertidos de petróleo, como el del Prestige en Galicia en 2002 y el de Repsol en Perú en 2022, este documento pretende arrojar luz sobre la importancia de una reacción inicial competente. En definitiva, comprender el papel fundamental de esta respuesta no sólo para mitigar el impacto de la crisis en una organización, sino también para identificar las oportunidades de resiliencia y crecimiento.

Over the years, crises have become a regular occurrence for many organizations, encouraging the need for effective crisis management strategies. This field has evolved rapidly, looking to provide guidance to crisis managers to minimize the damage inflicted on the organization. As famously quoted by John F. Kennedy during his Presidential campaign speeches in 1959 and 1960, ‘the Chinese word for "crisis" is composed of two characters: one representing danger and the other representing opportunity’. This statement emphasizes the dual nature of a crisis, highlighting both the threat they pose, as well as the potential opportunities for growth they may present if handled appropriately. In addition to the evolving nature of crises, environmental disasters such as oil spills have highlighted the importance of the initial response in crisis management. By carrying out a comparative analysis between two prominent oil spills, such as the 2002 Prestige oil leak in Galicia and the 2022 Repsol oil spill in Peru, this paper aims to shed light on the significance of a competent initial reaction. Ultimately, understanding the pivotal role of this response in not only mitigating the impact of the crisis on an organization, but also identifying the opportunities for resilience and growth.
