Análisis del sector de utilities del S&P 600

Abstract

Este Trabajo de Fin de Grado se centra en analizar y valorar empresas del sector de utilities dentro del índice S&P 600 de la bolsa americana, compuesto por empresas de baja capitalización. La metodología aplicada se divide en tres fases principales: primero, un análisis exhaustivo de los fundamentos financieros para excluir firmas con alto riesgo de quiebra y evaluar la estabilidad de las restantes; segundo, la clasificación de estas empresas en categorías de valor y glamour utilizando el modelo Piotroski F-Score y otros indicadores financieros; y tercero, un análisis cualitativo detallado de los informes 10-K y 10-Q para identificar información relevante que no se refleja en los datos cuantitativos. El objetivo principal es identificar y recomendar empresas con alto potencial de inversión. Tras aplicar estos filtros, el estudio concluye que Clearway Energy es una opción de inversión atractiva debido a su estabilidad financiera, ausencia de necesidades de deuda externa, emisión de acciones, y su proyección de crecimiento sostenido. Por otro lado, MGE Energy, aunque financieramente sólida, se encuentra actualmente sobrevalorada en el mercado, lo que desaconseja su inversión en este momento. This Final Degree Project focuses on analyzing and valuing companies in the utilities sector within the S&P 600 index of the American stock market, comprised of small-cap companies. The applied methodology is divided into three main phases: first, a thorough analysis of the financial fundamentals to exclude firms with a high risk of bankruptcy and evaluate the stability of the remaining ones; second, the classification of these companies into value and glamour categories using the Piotroski F-Score model and other financial indicators; and third, a detailed qualitative analysis of the 10-K and 10-Q reports to identify relevant information not reflected in the quantitative data. The main objective is to identify and recommend companies with high investment potential. After applying these filters, the study concludes that Clearway Energy is an attractive investment option due to its financial stability, lack of external debt needs, absence of stock issuance, and its projected sustained growth. On the other hand, MGE Energy, although financially solid, is currently overvalued in the market, which discourages investment currently. This analysis provides a clear and well-founded guide for investment decision-making in the utilities sector within the S&P 600 index, highlighting the importance of a methodical and multidimensional approach.
