Abstract

¿Qué significa ser libre? ¿Podemos siquiera demostrar que lo somos? Y si lo fuéramos, ¿por qué deberíamos subordinar nuestra libertad a una norma ética? Si el universo no manifiesta interés alguno en nosotros, ¿por qué debemos actuar moralmente? Practiquemos o no el bien, la naturaleza seguirá su curso y continuará ciega ante los esfuerzos éticos de la humanidad. Por mucho que nos afanemos en escuchar su voz, su lenguaje resultará siempre ininteligible para nuestras aspiraciones, pues se basa en leyes matemáticas impersonales, fijadas en los inicios del universo y ajenas a cualquier preocupación por nuestra suerte y por el valor de nuestras acciones.
