Analysis and optimization of vehicle routes and driver assignment for transportation network companies
That caused that other services such as public transport or taxis have been affected. The high efficiency of the VTCs is due to programs of optimization of routes and assignment of drivers, such as the one that is intended to be designed in this project, and also to neural networks that predict the demand. On the other hand, systems such as shared trips allow optimization programs for a greater variety of possible routes.
Although there are many advantages, the data does not clarify if TNCs decrease the use of public transport, increasing the use of cars, or if on the contrary they complement it and help reduce the dependence on private cars. In the future, autonomous cars, united with TNCs, could substantially reduce the number of cars on the road.
Using the FICO Xpress optimization program, a route design and passenger assignment program has been developed. In it, two approaches to minimizing routes are proposed: the minimization of the cost and the minimization of waiting times. With the program, the differences that these two approaches create in the design of the routes are studied. In addition, by varying the basic parameters of the program, we will study how different variations modify the designed routes. Finally, a third minimization approach is proposed that mixes the two previous approaches, so that the design of routes is adjusted to the wishes of the users while the routes are not excessively long.

Optimal Zone Sizes and Headways for Flexible-Route Bus Services for Many-to-Many Demand Patterns
Acea Figueira, Alejandra
The aim of this research is to determine whether flexible-route bus systems are a cost-effective alternative to conventional bus services in scenarios with many-to-many demand patterns. In order to do this, we propose two different cases: on the one hand, a network comprised by three zones of similar characteristics (Case Study) and on the other hand a nine-region network with disparate features (Extension of Case Study). The final objective of this paper is to minimize the average costs per passenger by finding the optimal value of the headway for both a coordinated and an uncoordinated system (i.e. a network with common headways or a network with different headways depending on each region’s requirements). This dilemma is formulated as a nonlinear constrained optimization problem and will be solved by means of the Generalized Reduced Gradient algorithm. Since the results obtained are local solutions, we add the necessary condition of global optimality to find the absolute extremum instead. The resulting system costs of the Case Study are contrasted by conducting a sensitivity analysis to the following parameters: total demand, line haul distance and values of in-vehicle and waiting time. All in all, the outcomes found in both scenarios agree in that coordinated flexible services are more cost-effective than designing a network with different bus frequencies. The main cause are the rise in waiting costs -as passengers must wait at the central terminal to pick up the next bus- and the increase of service costs due to the higher number of vehicles needed. Additionally, sensitivity analysis shows that the value of in-vehicle time and the distance to the central station are key variables when designing a flexible-route bus system. Lastly, the suggestions proposed to improve this study are adding more constraints, using integer-ratios to increase coordination and implementing intermediate transfer stations.

Analysis in BoxSizer implementation to reduce the number of posible box sises
The process in which they place the orders has 2 main problems: first, as the WMS logic is not completely precise, it only gives an estimation of the most appropriate box for an order. On the other hand, workers cannot afford to spend much time trying to rearrange items to ensure the entire order fits in the given size, so many times they will add an additional box in order to fit all the products. In other words, the optimal package sizes are not always used leading to large volumes of empty space being shipped and unnecessary shipping and material costs.
To face this problem, the firm outsourced an analysis from a third-party with the
main objective of revealing the opportunities to improve their system and finding possible solutions. The assessment report suggested reducing the number of boxes from 13 to a maximum of 5, together with the purchase of a BoxSizer, an automated carton system equipment that adjusts the size of a package to the height of the products inside, removing the empty space that would have been on top of it.
In order to prepare for the implementation of the equipment, the dimensions of the new boxes that the BoxSizer will take in should be determined so that its impact is maximized and costs are reduced as much as possible.
Together with the search for the optimal dimensions, the project will aim to support the implementation, through the study of its economic and operational feasibility.

Bouncers is a non-profit organization located in the city of Gainesville, state of Florida (USA). It focuses on educating young children while they stay active and healthy.
In order to grow, this business needs to increase the number of families that have memberships. This number has been stuck in around 100 for the past years. Without this number growing, the owner does not want to take the risk of upgrading the facility. The objective is to find a feasible way for the business to keep the families from leaving and attract new families to sign up.
The business is currently lacking a good dining and chilling area for parents to relax while their children play. Improving this area is the most feasible way to reach the objective. Some parents showed their concerns about this area, assuring it is the main reason they do not bring their children more often.
This project will focus on developing an exciting café area for adults, with children entertainment. The idea is to develop different possibilities for the owner to choose from and hand him everything needed to carry on with the project.
The project involves designing a plan to build a café and introducing a new seating area, in the back patio. The spaces will provide adequate seating for the volume of customers on any typical day. The construction requires the patio roof to be sealed, a new doorway to be constructed, and furniture to be acquired. The café will provide hot drinks and pre-packaged snacks available for purchase. The design will not necessitate any additional labor costs to be introduced, as the employee running the desk can also man the café. With the addition of this new space for parents to enjoy, Bouncers will see an increase of customer satisfaction and total visits.
