<dim:field element="description" qualifier="abstract" language="en-GB" mdschema="dc">This dissertation analyses the role of environmental labelling and corporate self-regulation in addressing greenwashing. It is based on the hypothesis that environmental labels, certifications and claims may reduce information asymmetry between companies and consumers, but remain insufficient when conflicts of interest arise between sustainability, corporate reputation and economic profit.

Using a qualitative, analytical and comparative methodology, the study examines the concepts of sustainable development, greenwashing, self-regulation and hybrid governance, as well as the relevant European legal framework. It then analyses the cases of IKEA, H&M and Volkswagen, which represent different levels of tension between communicated sustainability and actual corporate conduct.

The dissertation concludes that environmental labelling is only reliable when supported by clear criteria, independent verification, traceability, transparency and legal accountability. It therefore argues for a hybrid governance model combining private standards and public oversight.</dim:field>
