This book brings together eleven studies presented at the 8th Interdisciplinary Seminar “Modernity and Virtue in Jesuit Culture (16th–17th Centuries): A Paradigm Shift”, held in October 2024 and organized by Universidad Pontificia Comillas and the Medieval and Renaissance Studies Group (GEMYR) of UNED. The contributors examine how the Society of Jesus—positioned at the intersection between the humanist tradition and the challenges of early modernity—became a paradigmatic voice in debates on virtue, education, individual morality, and social transformation. Across the various chapters, the volume explores topics such as:

The Jesuits’ reinterpretation of the classical ideal of virtue, endowing it with a practical and contextual dimension. The tension between religious interiority and engagement with the world. A possible Baroque shift toward classical Stoicism, relocating the otherness of the good toward a more secular, goal-oriented ethical horizon. Specific cases such as the cultivation of virtue in Jesuit colleges, the canonization of Jesuit figures, preaching and morality, Jesuit missions in the East, and connections with thinkers such as Pascal, Gracián, Machiavelli, Nieremberg, and Kircher.

Taken together, the book aims to show how the Jesuits of the 16th and 17th centuries contributed to a paradigm shift in ethical and educational thought, adapting classical virtues to the spiritual, cultural, and social challenges of their time.
