NATO-Europe-US Cooperation in the Indo-Pacific: Challenging Times Ahead

Abstract

El artículo analiza las perspectivas de cooperación entre la OTAN, Europa y Estados Unidos en la región del Indo-Pacífico en un contexto internacional cada vez más complejo. El autor examina el papel de los principales socios regionales de la OTAN —Australia, Japón, Corea del Sur y Nueva Zelanda— y sus distintas prioridades estratégicas. También aborda el creciente interés europeo por la región, impulsado por factores económicos, de seguridad y políticos. Sin embargo, la evolución de la política exterior estadounidense, especialmente bajo una administración más impredecible, introduce incertidumbre en la cooperación transatlántica. El texto sostiene que Europa deberá asumir un papel más activo tanto en su entorno inmediato como en el Indo-Pacífico, incrementando su gasto en defensa y reforzando la cooperación con socios regionales. En este escenario, una mayor coordinación entre Europa, los socios indo-pacíficos y la OTAN podría contribuir a gestionar los desafíos geopolíticos emergentes.

The article examines the prospects for cooperation among NATO, Europe and the United States in the Indo-Pacific amid growing geopolitical uncertainty. It reviews the priorities of NATO’s regional partners—Australia, Japan, South Korea and New Zealand—and highlights their different strategic interests and levels of engagement with the Alliance. The paper also discusses Europe’s increasing involvement in the region, driven by economic, strategic and political considerations. However, shifts in US foreign policy, particularly under a more unpredictable administration, may complicate traditional patterns of transatlantic cooperation. The author argues that Europe will need to assume a more proactive role both in its immediate neighbourhood and in the Indo-Pacific by increasing defence spending and strengthening cooperation with regional partners. In this context, deeper coordination among European states, Indo-Pacific partners and NATO could help address emerging geopolitical challenges.
