Bioética de los espacios y modelos residenciales

Abstract

Este capítulo introductorio plantea que la calidad ética de un centro sanitario o sociosanitario depende en gran medida de las relaciones humanas que es capaz de generar. Para ello, destaca dos factores decisivos: el espacio arquitectónico y el modelo de convivencia. El autor sostiene que las personas no son meros usuarios o residentes, sino habitantes, y que habitar implica arraigo, seguridad, significado y vínculo con los otros. Desde esta perspectiva, la arquitectura transmite valores sobre dignidad, intimidad, autonomía y cuidado, mientras que el modelo residencial condiciona la convivencia y el reconocimiento mutuo. En la vejez y la vulnerabilidad, diseñar espacios y organizar la convivencia se convierte en una cuestión bioética. El capítulo presenta así el marco conceptual del libro y anticipa los temas abordados en los capítulos posteriores.

This introductory chapter argues that the ethical value of a health or social care center depends largely on the quality of the human relationships it is able to foster. To explain this, it highlights two key factors: architectural space and the model of coexistence. The author maintains that people in these settings are not merely users or residents, but inhabitants, and that inhabiting involves rootedness, safety, meaning, and connection with others. From this perspective, architecture conveys values related to dignity, privacy, autonomy, and care, while the residential model shapes everyday coexistence and mutual recognition. In old age and vulnerability, designing spaces and organizing communal life become bioethical matters. The chapter therefore provides the conceptual framework of the book and introduces the main issues developed in the following chapters.
