¿Qué podemos decir del Purgatorio? Aproximación teológica

Abstract

La imagen y el concepto del “purgatorio” han ido deformándose en su sentido y expresión a lo largo de la historia de la Iglesia. En este capítulo tratamos de resituar el tema en el contexto del tratado de gracia —único lugar desde el que se hace comprensible, en tanto que gracia postmortal. Revisamos la doctrina para —tras una breve presentación de los posicionamientos de la teología contemporánea— ensayar algunas afirmaciones que puedan servir como marco teológico desde el que entender hoy el purgatorio y como referencia que nos permita adentrarnos, con una mirada crítica, en las vicisitudes del concepto a lo largo de la historia y en una pluralidad de campos del saber.

The image and concept of “purgatory” have been deformed in their meaning and expression throughout the history of the Church. In this chapter we try to reposition the topic in the context of the theology of grace —the only place from which it is understandable, as postmortem grace. We review the doctrine and, after a brief presentation of the positions of contemporary theology, attempt some statements that can serve as a theological framework from which to understand purgatory today and as a reference that allows us to enter, with a new look, into the vicissitudes of the concept throughout history and in a plurality of fields of knowledge.
