Italy as a Regional Power: The African Context from National Unification to the Present Day

Abstract

Esta monografía analiza la evolución del papel de Italia como potencia regional en el Mediterráneo africano y en el Cuerno de África desde la unificación nacional de 1861 hasta la actualidad. El estudio examina el colonialismo italiano, la construcción y caída del imperio, y las relaciones poscoloniales con Libia, Eritrea, Etiopía y Somalia. También aborda la proyección política, económica, militar y diplomática italiana en la región, con especial atención al periodo posterior a la Segunda Guerra Mundial y a los efectos de las Primaveras Árabes. A partir de un enfoque geopolítico y del uso combinado de fuentes cualitativas y cuantitativas, la obra sostiene que Italia ha mantenido una influencia regional discontinua pero significativa.

This book examines the evolution of Italy’s role as a regional power in Mediterranean Africa and the Horn of Africa from national unification in 1861 to the present day. It explores Italian colonial expansion, the rise and fall of the Fascist empire, and postcolonial relations with Libya, Eritrea, Ethiopia, and Somalia. The study also investigates Italy’s political, economic, military, and diplomatic influence in the region, including its role during and after the Arab Springs. Using a geopolitical framework and a combination of qualitative and quantitative data, the book argues that Italy has exercised a significant though uneven regional influence over time.
