Italian Peacekeeping Missions: Vast, Praised and Underused

Abstract

El artículo analiza el papel de las misiones de paz italianas en el marco de la política exterior del país. Italia se presenta como uno de los principales contribuyentes a operaciones de mantenimiento de la paz a nivel global, con una amplia presencia en regiones como Oriente Medio, África del Norte, los Balcanes y el Cuerno de África. Estas misiones combinan intereses nacionales con valores humanitarios y multilaterales. Sin embargo, el estudio señala que su potencial está infrautilizado debido a factores internos como la inestabilidad política, limitaciones económicas y falta de reconocimiento público. Además, identifica riesgos emergentes como tensiones geopolíticas, la crisis libia, la influencia de China y los efectos de la pandemia de COVID-19, que podrían afectar la eficacia futura de estas operaciones.

The article examines the role of Italian peacekeeping missions within the framework of the country’s foreign policy. Italy is presented as one of the leading contributors to global peace support operations, with a strong presence in regions such as the Middle East, North Africa, the Balkans and the Horn of Africa. These missions combine national interests with humanitarian and multilateral values. However, the study argues that their potential is underused due to internal factors such as political instability, economic constraints and limited public awareness. It also identifies emerging risks, including geopolitical tensions, the Libyan crisis, growing Chinese influence and the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic, which may affect the future effectiveness of these operations.
