Abstract

El capítulo analiza el Indo-Pacífico como nuevo centro geopolítico y geoeconómico del siglo XXI. Explica por qué la noción de Indo-Pacífico ha sustituido a la de Asia-Pacífico y examina las principales competiciones estratégicas de la región, especialmente la rivalidad entre Estados Unidos y China, las tensiones entre China e India y la presión que soportan las potencias medias del ASEAN. También estudia las grandes desigualdades socioeconómicas y los riesgos ambientales y climáticos que atraviesan la macroregión. En la parte final, el autor revisa la evolución del enfoque europeo hacia el Indo-Pacífico, con atención a Francia, Reino Unido, Alemania, Países Bajos, la Unión Europea e Italia, y concluye señalando oportunidades, incertidumbres y la creciente centralidad global de la región.

This chapter analyses the Indo-Pacific as the new geopolitical and geoeconomic centre of the twenty-first century. It explains why the Indo-Pacific concept has replaced the Asia-Pacific framework and examines the region’s main strategic competitions, especially the rivalry between the United States and China, tensions between China and India, and the pressure faced by ASEAN middle powers. It also discusses the macroregion’s major socioeconomic inequalities and its environmental and climate vulnerabilities. In the final part, the author reviews the gradual development of the European approach to the Indo-Pacific, focusing on France, the United Kingdom, Germany, the Netherlands, the European Union, and Italy. The chapter concludes by highlighting both the opportunities and the uncertainties created by the region’s growing global centrality.
