La mano de Dios las atormenta: líneas fundamentales de la predicación sobre el purgatorio en la Edad Moderna española
Abstract
El tema del purgatorio alcanzó una amplia presencia en el mundo religioso postridentino. Este trabajo lo explora en el ámbito de la predicación española: conectados con una literatura tratadística y devocional que le sirve de trasfondo, los sermones impresos dan testimonio de la difusión de esta temática en los púlpitos españoles. Tras perfilar las características de estas fuentes, nos acercamos a su contenido, derivado de una determinada concepción de la satisfacción penitencial y la expiación de los pecados. Pese a pertenecer al más allá de la muerte, las dimensiones de espacio (lugar de cautiverio) y tiempo (almas detenidas en el camino hacia el cielo) y la consideración de las penas (pago de la deuda por el pecado) ocuparon el centro de esta predicación. En último término, estos tormentos se atribuyen a Dios, cuya justicia utiliza el fuego como instrumento. Y las almas, no pudiendo ya merecer, sino solo padecer, precisan del auxilio de los vivos para acortar su sufrimiento. This work explores it in the field of Spanish preaching: connected with a treatise and devotional literature that serves as a background, the printed sermons testify to the dissemination of this theme in Spanish pulpits. After outlining the characteristics of these sources, we approach their content, derived from a certain conception of penitential satisfaction and atone ment for sins. Despite belonging to the afterlife of death, the dimensions of
space (place of captivity) and time (souls detained on the way to heaven) and
the consideration of penalties (payment of the debt for sin) occupied the centre
of this preaching. Ultimately, these torments are attributed to God, whose justice
uses fire as an instrument. And souls, no longer able to merit, but only to suffer,
need the help of the living to shorten their suffering. We are facing an ecclesiastical
discourse that affects the image of God and the experience of Christianity.
