Bonus demonstrator. Agustín de Hipona como acompañante espiritual a través de sus cartas

Abstract

La presente investigación versa sobre Agustín de Hipona (354-430), tratando de descubrir si, quien es considerado como referente de la cultura occidental, e, igualmente, de la teología católica, puede ser tenido, también, como un buen guía, o «mostrador/demostrador» de los caminos que conducen a los hombres hacia Dios, es decir, como un buen acompañante espiritual. Con este objetivo se lleva a cabo un análisis sistemático de más de treinta cartas agustinianas, a través de las que se pretende detectar la presencia de elementos constitutivos del acompañamiento espiritual. Poniendo en juego el método sintético-descriptivo se efectúa un acercamiento hermenéutico-teológico a los textos, teniendo en cuenta las claves propias de la teología espiritual. De este modo, se podrían establecer unas líneas básicas de acompañamiento espiritual desde claves agustinianas. El trabajo consta de diez capítulos, repartidos en tres secciones, y flanqueados, al inicio, por una introducción y, al final, por una conclusión. La primera sección, compuesta de un único apartado, puede ser considerada como de enfoque y planteamiento (cap. 1). La segunda sección, la más amplia de esta investigación, es, eminentemente, analítica. Se centra en el estudio de un número significativo de cartas de Agustín, con la intención de descubrir la presencia de determinados rasgos característicos del acompañamiento espiritual en distintos momentos de la vida del tagastino (caps. 2-8). La tercera sección del estudio funge como síntesis de los resultados obtenidos tras el análisis del epistolario, con la intención de que se hagan patentes las implicaciones descubiertas que atañen al objeto de investigación (caps. 9-10). Tomando pie de los resultados parciales consignados al final de cada capítulo, se ofrecen, también, unas conclusiones finales que se acercan, en primer lugar, a los elementos relacionados con el acompañamiento espiritual, y, en segundo término, a la imagen de Agustín como acompañante que proyectan las cartas estudiadas. Se deja constancia, asimismo, de algunas de las contribuciones relevantes del trabajo realizado, así como de ciertas cuestiones que deja abiertas la investigación.

This research focuses on Augustine of Hippo (354-430), seeking to discover whether he, considered a cornerstone of Western culture and Catholic theology, can also be regarded as a good guide, or bonus demonstrator of the paths that lead people to God, that is, as a good spiritual companion. With this objective in mind, a systematic analysis of more than thirty of Augustinian letters is undertaken, through which the presence of elements constitutive of spiritual accompaniment is sought to be detected. Employing a synthetic-descriptive method, a hermeneutical-theological approach to the texts is adopted, based on the key principles of spiritual theology. In this way, basic guidelines for spiritual accompaniment rooted on Augustinian principles can be established. The work comprises ten chapters, divided into three sections, flanked, at the beginning, by an introduction and, at the end, by a conclusion. The first section, consisting of a single chapter, can be considered as an overview and introduction (Chapter 1). The second section, the most extensive in this research, is eminently analytical. It focuses on the study of a significant number of Augustine's letters, with the aim of discovering the presence of certain characteristic features of spiritual accompaniment at different moments in the life of the bishop of Hippo (Chapters 2-8). The third section of the study serves as a synthesis of the results obtained after the analysis of the correspondence, with the intention of highlighting the implications discovered that pertain to the object of research (Chapters 9-10). Based on the partial results recorded at the end of each chapter, final conclusions are offered. These conclusions address, firstly, the elements related to spiritual accompaniment, and, secondly, the image of Augustine as a companion projected by the letters studied. Some of the relevant contributions of the work carried out are also noted, as well as certain questions left open by the research.
