Hospitais laicos e eclesiásticos em Coimbra, do século XII ao início do século XX. O progressivo desenvolvimento da enfermagem

Abstract

El estudio presenta una síntesis historiográfica sobre los hospitales de Coimbra desde la Edad Media hasta comienzos del siglo XX, analizando el desarrollo progresivo de la enfermería. A partir de una revisión exploratoria de libros, artículos y documentos históricos, se identifican instituciones hospitalarias relevantes y se estudia la evolución de los cuidadores y enfermeros en distintos periodos históricos. El trabajo describe el proceso de concentración hospitalaria iniciado en el siglo XVI y la transformación de los hospitales medievales en hospitales modernos, vinculada al avance de la ciencia y de la higiene. Asimismo, se analiza la profesionalización de la enfermería, la diferenciación de categorías profesionales y la creación de la primera Escuela de Enfermeros de Portugal en 1881 en los Hospitales de la Universidad de Coimbra.

The study presents a historiographical synthesis of hospitals in Coimbra from the Middle Ages to the early twentieth century, analyzing the progressive development of nursing. Based on an exploratory review of books, articles, and historical documents, relevant hospital institutions were identified and the evolution of caregivers and nurses throughout different historical periods was examined. The article describes the hospital centralization process initiated in the sixteenth century and the transformation of medieval hospitals into modern healthcare institutions linked to advances in science and hygiene. It also analyzes the professionalization of nursing, the differentiation of nursing roles and categories, and the establishment in 1881 of the first Nursing School in Portugal at the Hospitals of the University of Coimbra.
