Enfermeiros em Portugal no tempo de Nightingale

Abstract

Contexto: En el siglo XIX se produjo la modernización hospitalaria, la afirmación de la ciencia médica y el desarrollo exponencial de la actividad enfermera. Objetivo: Conocer la actividad de los enfermeros en Portugal durante el siglo de Nightingale. Metodología: Investigación histórica basada en el análisis y explicación de un pasado reconstruido mediante el examen de documentos históricos y fuentes primarias. Resultados: A lo largo del siglo XIX se produjo una profunda transformación de la actividad enfermera, visible en la expansión de sus funciones, la creación de escuelas de enfermería y el avance hacia la profesionalización. Se analizan las condiciones laborales, la organización hospitalaria, la formación de enfermeros y enfermeras y la influencia de Florence Nightingale y de las corrientes higienistas y positivistas. Conclusión: El siglo de Nightingale marcó el inicio de la consolidación de la enfermería como profesión y disciplina científica en Portugal.

Context: In the 19th century, hospital modernization, the affirmation of medical science, and the exponential development of nursing activities transformed healthcare systems across Europe. Objective: To understand the activity of nurses in Portugal during the Nightingale century. Methodology: Historical research based on the analysis and interpretation of primary historical sources, parliamentary records, university yearbooks, and institutional publications. Results: Throughout the century, nursing activities underwent significant transformation, reflected in the expansion of nursing roles, the creation of nursing schools, and a gradual movement toward professionalization. The study discusses hospital organization, working conditions, nursing education, and the influence of Florence Nightingale alongside positivist and hygienist movements. Conclusion: The Nightingale century represented a decisive stage in the consolidation of nursing as both a profession and a scientific discipline in Portugal, contributing to the modernization of healthcare institutions and professional training.
