Mallorca en llamas. Las víctimas del primer terror aéreo de la Guerra Civil

Abstract

En el verano de 1936, Mallorca se convirtió en el primer escenario de la historia donde la población civil fue atacada de forma sistemática desde el aire. La aviación republicana realizó 46 incursiones en el primer mes de guerra para forzar la rendición de las autoridades golpistas. Aunque los objetivos eran militares, las bombas también cayeron sobre barrios obreros y zonas comerciales. Los mallorquines descubrieron que ya nadie estaba seguro en una guerra moderna: niños, mujeres y ancianos podían morir de la forma más horrible. Este libro recupera, por primera vez, la historia humana de las víctimas de aquellos ataques. A partir de fuentes primarias inéditas, la obra da nombre y voz a civiles inocentes ―entre ellos 32 mujeres y 17 menores― cuya memoria fue ignorada y, en muchos casos, silenciada. Un trabajo necesario que no solo reconstruye un episodio clave de la Guerra Civil, sino que cumple con el deber moral y legal de reconocer, reparar y dignificar a todas las víctimas sin distinguir el bando.

Before Guernica, Mallorca had already experienced the terror of aerial bombardments. In the summer of 1936, the island became the first place in history where the civilian population was systematically attacked from the air. The Republican air force carried out 46 raids in the first month of the war to force the surrender of the coup leaders. Although the targets were military, bombs also fell on working-class neighborhoods and commercial areas. The people of Mallorca discovered that no one was safe in modern warfare: children, women, and the elderly could die in the most horrific ways. This book recovers, for the first time, the human stories of the victims of those attacks. Using previously unpublished primary sources, the work gives names and voices to innocent civilians—including 32 women and 17 children—whose memory was ignored and, in many cases, silenced. A necessary work that not only reconstructs a key episode of the Civil War, but also fulfills the moral and legal duty to recognize, repair and dignify all victims without distinguishing the side.
