Abstract

l artículo analiza el proceso de la Congregación General 36 de la Compañía de Jesús, convocada en 2014 por el P. Adolfo Nicolás con dos objetivos principales: elegir un nuevo Superior General y discernir los grandes temas que afectaban a la vida y misión de la Compañía. El proceso previo implicó a jesuitas y colaboradores de todo el mundo, que identificaron llamadas vinculadas a la reconciliación, la renovación espiritual, el cuidado de la Iglesia, la atención a migrantes y personas vulnerables, y la responsabilidad ecológica.

El texto describe después la fase de elección, marcada por el discernimiento común, la oración y las llamadas “murmuraciones”, que culminaron el 14 de octubre de 2016 con la elección del P. Arturo Sosa como nuevo Superior General. También destaca la visita del Papa Francisco, quien no señaló tanto el “qué” de la misión jesuita, sino el “cómo”: vivir desde la alegría del Evangelio, la compasión ante los crucificados del mundo y el discernimiento en comunión con la Iglesia.

Finalmente, el artículo presenta los frutos principales de la Congregación: la renovación del gobierno general, la publicación de documentos sobre vida, misión y gobierno, y una llamada a cuidar la vida comunitaria, profundizar en la fe, practicar la misericordia y renovar la misión desde una mayor integración entre comunidad, espiritualidad y servicio apostólico.

The article examines the process of the 36th General Congregation of the Society of Jesus, convened in 2014 by Fr. Adolfo Nicolás with two main aims: to elect a new Superior General and to discern the major issues affecting the life and mission of the Society. The preparatory process involved Jesuits and collaborators worldwide, who identified key calls related to reconciliation, spiritual renewal, care for the Church, attention to migrants and vulnerable people, and ecological responsibility.

The text then describes the election phase, shaped by communal discernment, prayer, and the traditional period of “murmurations,” which led to the election of Fr. Arturo Sosa as Superior General on 14 October 2016. It also highlights Pope Francis’ visit, during which he focused not so much on the “what” of Jesuit mission, but on the “how”: living with Gospel joy, compassion for the crucified of today’s world, and discernment in communion with the Church.

Finally, the article presents the main fruits of the Congregation: the renewal of the General Council, the publication of documents on life, mission, and governance, and a call to care for community life, deepen faith, practice mercy, and renew the mission through greater integration between community, spirituality, and apostolic service.
