This chapter offers a philosophical reading of Jean Renoir’s 1945 film The Southerner through the concept of hope. Within the broader framework of the book, which explores the relationship between cinema, philosophy, and Gabriel Marcel’s Homo Viator, the study places the film in a reflection on human dignity, endurance in the face of hardship, and the possibility of sustaining active trust under difficult material conditions. Renoir’s film makes it possible to examine how work, family, poverty, nature, and community are connected to a form of hope that is neither naïve nor abstract, but embodied in concrete human actions.
