Abstract
A project of these characteristics starts with the study of the location, determining the
wind turbines to install and their distribution in ground, which will not be specified in
this project but roughly described.
Next step, which is the main core of the Project, is the design of the electrical system
installations: how the wind turbines are connected to each other, their connection to the
substation, the design of the substation and its connection to the electrical grid.
After choosing the necessary devices and switchgear having into account the legal
regulations and electrical design restrictions, a budget of the wind farm is made and
also documents about the General Terms and Conditions and also Technical
Specifications document.
Project development
In the project, all electrical characteristics of a wind farm had been developed attending
to the current legal framework. The wind farm subject of this project is located in the municipality of Alfoz de
Quintanadueñas, in the Province of Burgos, and it is equipped with 15 wind turbines of
2 MW unit capacity, which means a total of 30 MW installed power.
The network configuration used in the wind farm is a radial configuration, arranging
the wind turbines in two lines that branch off, having seven or eight wind turbines in
each line. The placement of the wind turbines has been made taking into account the
minimum distances between each other and distances from residential premises.
A dry type transformer is installed inside each wind turbine which will raise the
generating voltage (690 V) to the underground transmission lines’ voltage, 20 kV. In
the same way, each wind turbine will have a kiosk next to its base which will contain
the enclosed switchgear (switch-disconnectors, circuit breakers, etc.) that will allow to
make any operations needed and maintenance tasks in a safe way. It will also contain
control and measuring devices.
From each transformation center, an underground power transmission network will
bring the power produced by the wind turbines to the substation. This network is
designed following different criteria: maximum current flow allowable, maximum
voltage drops and maximum short-circuit current allowable. It will also be considered
the criterion of power loss although this parameter is just an economic criterion.
The substation will raise the voltage from 20 kV of the underground power transmission
network to 45 kV of the power grid where the generated power will be evacuated by
the use of a transformer of 35 MVA, which is power enough to evacuate the 30 MW
produced by the wind turbines. The substation configuration is single busbar in both
voltage sides. It has an outdoor part and an indoor part. The indoor part consists on the
control building where the medium-voltage modules, the auxiliary services, etc. will be
installed. In the outdoor part consists on the 45/20 kV step-up transformer, a hybrid
compact switchgear PASS, that will provide protection to the network, and surge
arresters.
The Project also includes the wind farm’s earthing network: from the wind turbines,
the underground power transmission network and the substation, in order to limit the forward and contact voltage, bearing in mind the earth fault current, different earthing
systems, etc.), choosing the configuration that results the most economic respecting all
security values.
After designing all electrical aspects of the wind farm, a detailed budget is developed
and also documents about the General Terms and Conditions and a Technical
Specifications document.
