debido a infiltraciones.
The goal of this project is to meet the needs of heating, ventilation and air conditioning
of a shopping mall in Barcelona, Spain. All the operations made will fulfill the technical
and legal requirements that are active in the present moment.
To accomplish these requirements, the main legal reference of the project will be the
Reglamento de Instalaciones Térmicas en los Edificios and the UNE standards related
with the appliance.
At first, the design conditions of the project have been defined. The shopping mall
projected includes two main floors (planta Baja and planta Plaza) and it is not attached
to any other building nearby. This means there will be heating loses over all its facades.
The HVAC system of the building will be divided in two different systems, heating the
corridor (also known as “mall” itself) and the establishments. The total number of
establishments is 192 and the use of these shops is unknown, so the best option is to
provide the shops with air and water connections and each establishment owner will
install its own independent and autonomous appliance according to their necessities.
These independent appliances help the calculation of bills and costs for each
establishment. The HVAC system of establishments that exceed the area of 1000 m2 will
not be part of this project.
The refrigeration machines (also known as chillers), the boilers, the air conditioning
machines and the rest of the appliances that are part of the HVAC system of the building
will be installed on the deck of the said building.
The conditions of the inside of the building will be taken into account in order to
calculate the thermal loses that the HVAC system has to oppose. These conditions
include the air quality, occupation conditions, quantity of lighting, etc.
Also the conditions of the outside of the building will have to be taken into account.
These conditions correspond to the city of Barcelona. In summer, Barcelona has a dry
temperature of 27.8 ºC while in winter this temperature is 2 ºC. The wet temperature in
summer is 22.6 ºC. the relative humidity is 64% and the height of the city is 95 m over
sea level.
The designing of the HVAC system will have to satisfy the appropriate comfort
conditions described in the IDA classification. The IDA classification for commercial
buildings is IDA 3. These conditions imply a relative humidity of 50% and temperatures
of 21 ºC and 24 ºC for summer and winter, respectively.
The thermal loads to be considered in summer are transmission loads, occupation loads
and lighting loads. These loads depend on the surface of the building. For the winter
case, only the transmission loads through the enclosures will be considered because the
rest of the loads favor the heating of the building. Data has been used to determine the
day more unfavorable for summer and for winter.
Loses through infiltrations are not necessary to be calculated because the building will
suffer overpressure.
The HVAC of the building will have two different systems. It is assumed that the
establishments will be provided of an autonomous system that will process the air in
each shop, so in this case the air conditioners will only be used to supply air to the
establishments. The autonomous machine of each shop will filter the air and will exploit
the temperature of the water provided through the pipework of the building.
The pipes will come from the pumping chamber that will be on the deck, they will pass
through the refrigerating system or through the boilers as appropriate. This system is
adequate to condition the air of several establishments of different sizes, because each
establishment has its own particular necessities depending on its activities. This system
is also known as air - water system.
The second system ventilates the mall corridors. In this system, the air is already filtered
and processed when it goes through the conducts. The processing of the air is done in
the air conditioners on the deck. This reduces the number of machines used. The air is
casted through the nozzles in the mall.
The nozzles are installed at a convenient height for its correct performance. This air is
collected through the racks and goes back to the air conditioners through the returning
conducts. Once the air comes back from the mall, the air conditioners mix the returning
air with air from the outside so it fulfills the quality needs and it can be used again in the
mall. This system is useful in large spaces that do not need different air conditions in
different areas, so the air is only processed once on the deck. This method is also called
all air system.
The power that the HVAC system needs in summer is 6400 kW while the power needed
in winter is 3032 kW. Because it is the same installation for both situations, the design
is made taking into account the situation with more requirements, summer.
In total, including the backups, the building will be provided with 30 air conditioners, 5
refrigerators and 4 boilers. All these machines fulfill the temperature requirements and
the minimum air quality.
In the case of the establishments, there will be impulsion conducts, returning conducts,
impulsion pipes and returning pipes. In the case of the mall the pipework will not be
necessary because the air will be processed on the deck.
The characteristics of the machines selected for the installation are detailed in this
project and its construction drawings.
The total budget, including the assembly, the tests and the handing over is 3,234,310.80
€ (three million two hundred and thirty-four thousand three hundred and ten euros and
eighty euro cents).
