The objective of this project is to define and design the air conditioning system of an office
building in Cáceres, Spain, carrying out all of the calculations needed and respecting the
Reglamento de Instalaciones Térmicas en los Edificios (RITE). The designed system includes
the refrigeration system, the heating system and the ventilation system.
First of all, the building has been analysed, defining all of its constructive characteristics. The
office building is made up of 7 floors to be acclimatized. Each floor has been divided in
different rooms. Then, a further analysis has been conducted for each room, in which the
thermal loads have been calculated. The characteristics defined for each room include its
internal air quality and temperature, its usage and lighting conditions and finally, its external
conditions.
Once all of the rooms and their characteristics have been defined, the thermal loads must be
calculated. The thermal loads must be calculated for summer conditions, to design the
refrigeration system, and winter conditions, for the heating system. Both are calculated at the
least favourable conditions.
The summer thermal loads depend on the rooms’ dimensions, the solar radiation, the heat
transfer through walls, the rate of occupation and the thermal loads resulting from the lighting
system. These thermal loads have been calculated by an iterative process, which assures that
the study is conducted under the least favourable conditions.
After the summer thermal loads have been calculated for each of the rooms to be
acclimatized, the summer’s global computing must be performed. To do so, the building is
considered as one big block under the least favourable conditions.
In contrast to the summer thermal loads, when calculating the winter thermal loads, only the
external factors are considered, since the internal ones foster the desirable comfort conditions.
The winter thermal load for each room is the result of the addition of the heat losses due to
transmission through walls and due to the presence of ventilation external air. The winter
thermal loads must be calculated at the least favourable conditions that, in this case,
correspond to January at 8 a.m.Once the winter thermal loads have been calculated for each room, the winter’s global
computing must be performed, also at the least favourable conditions, which is in January at
8 a.m. Since the same month and time have been taken into account for the winter thermal
loads calculation when performed for each room, the winter’s global computing is the result
of the addition of all of the winter thermal loads of each room.
After both summer and winter thermal loads calculations are completed, the design of the air
conditioning system can be carried out. There are two different cases of study: All-air
systems and air-water systems.
The optimal choice is dependent on the acclimatizing requirements of each room and its
dimensions. According with the constructive characteristics of the office building in question,
and taking the results from the load thermal calculations into account, it has been decided that
only the conference theatre will be acclimatized using an all-air system, stablishing an airwater
system for all of the remaining rooms. As for the toilets, which are considered no
acclimatized rooms, they will have an extraction system, so that the RITE requirements
related with quality of the ventilation air are met.
The air-water systems include fancoils, air conditioners, networks of pipes and finally,
networks of conducts.
The fancoils have been selected according to the thermal load requirements of the room,
given the cases where there are more than one fancoil per room. The fancoils receive the
external air after treatment in the air conditioners, where it is mixed with the returning air.
This mixture is treated in the fancoil, where it exchanges heat with the water that goes
through the pipes, given place to a supply air flow at the optimal conditions. Both the
returning and supply air, arrive and leave the fancoil without the need of conducts.
The all-air system includes an air conditioner, diffusors, grilles and a supply, returning and
extraction network of conducts.
The air conditioner is located at the building’s roof, and the external and returning air is
treated there. The returning air arrives in the air conditioner via the retuning conducts. The
supply air flow arrives in the conference theatre through the supply conducts, and it is
discharged in the room through the diffusors.
A network of pipes is necessary in the air-water system to transport the water to and from the
the fancoils. Pipes for both outgoing and returning water, both hot and cold, is necessary.
Both the supply and returning network are made of steel and have been represented by the
four identical single line schemes. The valves system has been also designed.
The network of pipes is divided into a primary network of pipes and a secondary network of
pipes. In the primary network of pipes, the cold water is transported from the refrigerating
unit to the pumps located in each floor, and the hot water from the boiler to the pumps
located in each floor. In order to select the appropriate pumps, the calculation of the pressure
loss in the least favourable stretch must be calculated for each circuit of pipes that composesthe secondary network of pipes, including the loss due to the presence of valves and different
accessories. Two circuits have been designed for each floor.
The sizing of the pipes has been carried out for each circuit, both in the primary and
secondary network, and they have been represented using a single line scheme in
AUTOCAD. All of the nodes have been numbered and the least favourable stretch has been
properly indicated.
The conduct network is responsible for transporting the air. There are four different kinds of
conducts: Returning air conducts, supply air conducts, extraction air conducts and external air
conducts.
The external air conduct is responsible for making the external air, previously treated in the
air conditioner, reach the fancoil; in other words, these conducts go from the air conditioner
located in the building’s roof to the fancoils located in the room to be acclimatized. The flow
rate required is obtained when calculating the summer thermal loads and it depends on the
occupation rate of the room and the ventilation needs.
The supply air conducts transport the supply air from the air conditioners to the diffusors.
The returning air conducts transport the returning air from the room acclimatized back to the
air conditioner, where is mixed with the external air, resulting in the supply air. The returning
air is taken from the acclimatized room thanks to the grilles that have been selected taking
into account the pressure loss in the least favourable stretch of circuit and the flow of air that
must go through each grille. The returning air is calculated as the difference between the
supply air and the external air.
The extraction conducts transport the extracted air from the rooms where the overpressure is
too high. The overpressure is too high if the flow of external air is bigger than the volume of
the room. The extraction conducts go from the room to an extractor. It has been established
that there is an independent extractor for each of the toilets and a recovery section in each of
the air conditioners for the remaining rooms, thus meeting the requirements of the RITE.
In order to select the fans of the air conditioners, the pressure loss in the least favourable
stretch of each circuit of conducts has been calculated. To do so, the sizing of the conducts
had to be carried out, drawing a single line scheme for each circuit of conducts in each floor,
numbering the nodes and indicating the least favourable stretch, using AUTOCAD.
The water required in the air conditioning system is cooled and heated in the refrigerating
machine and the boiler, respectively.
The refrigerating machine and the boiler have been selected using the summer’s global
computing and the winter’s global computing, respectively. The different catalogues have been studied in order to select the most suitable air
conditioning equipment. Once they had been selected, a budget has been carried out. The
final budget of the air conditioning system is 906.567,77 EUROS.
