Abstract
clean and efficient energy, en Europa y el World Energy Outlook, a nivel internacional.
The Project described in the present document consists on the development of a model
to estimate annual electricity production from any central receiver power plant, whose
specifications must be introduced in the program by the user. In addition, the model will
have a modular design, each module corresponding to the main blocks of a central
receiver power plant. This will allow the user to study in detail each of these blocks,
carrying out, for example, sensitivity studies for some elements by previously fixing
their boundary conditions.
In the first sections of the document the project will be framed, presenting the main
purposes that have led to the realization of this project and describing the status of the
technologies applied for thermosolar energy collection. The two main reasons are
related to sustainability (inter and intra generational) and to the technology learning
curve. In what refers to the state of the art, there will be references about thermosolar
energy in the past, in the present and in the future, both at a national level and at a
European and worldwide level.
Between the 80s and the 90s, the USA had the first initiative on this technologies, with
the project SEGS. However the development of this field was stopped until a few years.
In 2010, the total operation power worldwide was 1061 M, of which about the 60%
were located in Spain. Nowadays, there is about 4.950 MW of capacity installed in the
world, of which 2.400 MW are located in Spain and 1.300 MW in USA. Other
outstanding countries are Morroco and South Africa. The document “Plan de Energías
Renovables 2011-2020” can be used as a reference to describe the market forecast in
Spain, while the document “Paquete Europeo de Energía y Cambio Climático” is a
reference at European level and “World Energy Outlook” at an international scale.
A description of the four existing CSP technologies has also been done: parabolicthrough
technology (the most mature nowadays), central receiver plants (the technology
with better perspectives) and the solar Stirling engine ones (at an initial phase).
The first sections conclude mentioning two of the existing models which have a
function similar to the model proposed in the project, as both supply an annual
production given by: the SOLERGY and the SAM. The SOLERGY manual is the
document used as reference to design the model. The energy flux diagram which the
model follows is the same as the proposed by the SOLERGY. However, SOLERGY
only provides references to solve details of each of the parts of the diagram, while in the
model presented in this memory the equations have been integrated so that the user can
carry out the analysis mentioned in each part. On the other side, the results provided by
SAM have a more economic perspective. In addition, the model described serves as a base for the guarantee model presented together with an offer, making impossible to use
SOLERGY or SAM as guarantee models.
Afterwards, the designed model is described: the input data of each module (to be
introduced by the user) are mentioned, the methodology followed is detailed, and the
results and conclusions reached are presented. The routines or modules of the model are
the following: Solar Field Efficiency, Receiver Thermal Efficiency and Mass Flow,
Receiver Status, Pipes Thermal Losses, Always the System Is Able To Operation
(ASIAT Operation), MAXOUT Operation and Power Cycle, Auxiliaries and Offline
Power. All these routines have been programmed in VBA Excel, so that the results are
displayed in the respective Excel sheets. The output variables of a routine serve as input
variables for the following one.
The Solar Field Efficiency routine is based on the integration of the DELSOL3 code in
the model in order to calculate the mentioned efficiencies. In the Receiver Thermal
Efficiency and Mass Flux Routine, heat transmission equations are implemented in each
of the simulated pipe differentials, fixing either the salts exit temperature (preferential
option), or the receiver mass flow rate. In the routine of the Receiver Status, its state is
evaluated (start-up, shutdown and operation) with a status machine. In the ASIAT
Operation routine, the different status of the steam generating system and the turbine are
also evaluated by different status machines and taking into consideration the energy
storage level in each of the time steps considered, with the restriction by which the
turbine will try to operate while there is thermal energy available in storage. In the
Operation MAXOUT routine, the procedure is the same as the mentioned before, except
for the restriction, which now is to maximize the value of the generated electricity. In
the Power Cycle, Auxiliaries and Offline Power routine the user-defined input of the
thermal cycle efficiencies, auxiliaries and offline power are used to obtain the net
production of the plant at any moment.
The model has been tested by introducing the specifications of a certain plant, having as
a result a net annual production of about 10% higher than the estimated for the same
plant from other sources. In addition, through the execution of the model with the
operation strategies proposed, the results for four typical days (one for each season)
have been represented. In the following figures, the results for the ASIAT Operation
and MAXOUT Operation for a summer day have been shown.
