For mechanicism, freedom would be an illusion based on a false sense of control, as when we "see" that the sun moves around the earth. That is, when we value different alternatives and decide the one that suits us best, this conscious process would be no more than a mere epiphenomenon with no causal relevance, a mere concomitant consequence of the real unconscious processes responsible for the choice and that respond to sophisticated rules of calculation. Well, even though the majority of the mind sciences are nowadays, we consider that the debate is not much less closed and that there are arguments and data that would support the possibility that, in a certain way Measure, through our conscious activity we make decisions "freely". Moreover, we pretend to show how the characteristics of consciousness form a mode of processing that evolutionary development has precisely selected to be able to respond non-mechanically when the demands of the medium require it. Hence we have used in the first part of the title the paradoxical claim "programmed for freedom".
